Occupy Protests

As most of you know, there was a protest called Occupy a little bit ago. Although many already know what it is, some do not. Occupy is a protest that argues about people and the economy not being equal. The first movement to have wide media coverage was Occupy Wall street. In a Occupy protest, people go to a place and protest about equal economy and people. The Occupy movement uses the slogan, "we are the 99%" which means that the top 1% of the money earners in the country are controlling the government and not paying their far share of taxes. This movement started this fall of 2011. Some of the famous Occupy protests in 2011 were the Occupy Oakland, Occupy Wall street, Occupy Portland, and manny more even outside of the United States. Occupy Oakland is a famous protest because it was a question of police brutality because of a viral video of a police officer going down a line spraying college protesters with pepper spray. Video found here:  The Occupy protests are also sometimes associated with violence because some of the protests have not been in a peaceful manner. These protests are also controversial because the protesters get out of hand, the police have to come in, and it costs the 99% more money.

Here is another video about protesters in Portland, Oregon:  Right now I believe that the Occupy movement kind of makes since, but I think that there are many more ways to protest in much more effective ways because it seemed like the protests had a bad look and feel to it. Also in the Portland Occupy movement I think it attracted a lot of drugs and other bad things to the name of Occupy protests. I think on thing they could do is to have a organized group that could protest during the day and walk around the city streets and protest but then they would go home durring the night.

  1. Hi Jackson,
I thought that it was interesting how you mentioned the occupy protest, since we had people protesting in portland recently. I was wondering if this is the first time the 99% has spoke up against the 1%? Has something like this happened in history. I liked how you chose a topic that most people know about. Great blog.

    1. Annie,

I don't believe anything like that has happened before. Though, the occupy protests have been going on all over the world. I also could not find any information that tells me that they are doing the protest next year.

      Thanks,

  2. Hey Jackson,
Nice job on going deeper than just "it's a protest against the 1%." Also, I agree: the Occupy protest wasn't so great for the park. I saw the progress the protesters made in setting up there tents, then more and more, then the banners were hung. Then, after they were gone, there was a field of mud where the was a meadow. Once I hanging out at the protest site, and I saw people smoking everywhere. The Occupy movement was for a good cause, but they might have taken it a bit too far.

  3. Wonderful job Jackson! I really liked how you presented information and summarized the broad topic, because I know how hard it can be to do so. i agree that the protest is about having, in a sense, an economy that presents the citizens of our country with all the same opportunities no matter the wealth, but I also believe that the Occupy protest is about something bigger, like setting an example for other countries. Although it may not be serving that purpose today. The point about drugs being a problem in the Occupy Portland Protest surprised me because I had no idea that anything in that category was of concern. It was intriguing how you brought it up subtly. Almost suspenseful.
The pepper spray video was horrible. Those Policeman are vigorous and violent towards the protesters. It kinda makes me wonder why so much.
