Salt water taffy's, Jujubes, Chuckles...So many types!

In this blog post I will be talking about...CANDY! Who doesn't like candy? There are so many different textures and flavors, some are: fruity, creamy, sour, sweet, hard, soft, gooey, poppy, chocolate-y, gummy, and chewy. There are so many varieties: Gummy bears, Gummy worms, Snickers, Red vines, Milky ways, gum drops and Skittles. These types of candy are more modern, but what about candy in the 1800’s?

Some chewy candies from the 1800’s include, Salt water taffy, Jujubes, and Chuckles. Saltwater taffy comes in a long list of scrumptious flavors, each featuring its own unique color. The many pastel hues, like yellow, pink and orange, go back to this candy's seaside origins. Jujubes were first produced sometime before 1920. The original flavors were lilac, violet, rose, spearmint and lemon. Chuckles is a soft jelly candy with a dusting of sugar and includes flavors of lime, lemon, cherry, orange, and licorice.

Some sweet candies from the 1800’s include, Bit O'Honey, Neccos, and Squirrel Nut Zippers. Bit-O-Honey is a chewy candy with almond bits blended into a honey flavored taffy. Necco’s are circular waffers that melt in your mouth. They have a variety of different flavors such as orange, lemon, lime, clove, chocolate, cinnamon, licorice, and wintergreen. Squirrel Nut Zippers are a delicious combination of vanilla and caramel in a nutty taffy.

Some hard candies from the 19th century include, Rock Candy Swizzle Sticks,Rock Candy Crystals, and Long Boys. Rock Candy Swizzle Sticks are hard rock candy on a thin wooden stick. They come in a variety of colors in the rainbow. Rock Candy Crystals are bite sized vibrant colored candy crystals made of real, natural sugar. Long boys have brown and yellow wrapper with a mouth-watering stick of chocolate inside.

Candy is a big part of our world. We all enjoy chocolate whether you’re young or old. We have a holiday celebrating candy...that’s right HALLOWEEN! This is the night wear we go around in funky costumes stuffing our faces with sweet delectables. Candies good...that’s all there is to it.

The Passion of a Candy Maker

Candy has been here since the cavemen years where candy was just gooey honey, kind of like a taffy. In 2000 BC Egypt candy started becoming more advanced by adding fruit and nuts to honey. Although, you may ask how did we get from natural honey to factory made chocolate bars? Well it all started when a man named Cortez brought back a chocolate drink from Spain in the late 1700’s.
