Soccer Culture: More Than A Game

Soccer Culture: More Than A Game
When you think of soccer you might imagine a handful of little kids running around and having fun on a saturday. However, for many people it is a gateway out of their community or even their life. Many people, especially in developing countries, look at soccer as a way to escape. This may seem bizarre but this dream isn’t that far-fetched.
Let’s look back 20 years at Argentina, a developing country. A young boy named Leo loved to play soccer. He played soccer for hours everyday because he didn’t have anything else. Despite his lack of height, he established himself as one of the best youth players in the world. Then he was diagnosed with growth hormone deficiency. Leo’s family could not afford his medical treatment. So Barcelona, one of the largest soccer clubs in the world, offered him a contract where they would pay for his treatment if he played for them. At age 13 Lionel Messi was leaving everything behind for his future in another continent. He quickly made his way through Barca’s youth program ( kids as young as seven competing to become the next world’s best ). He made his debut for Barcelona as a 17 year-old. Lionel was making millions of dollars and assimilating tons of fame before he could even legally drive. Nowadays, Lionel Messi is a household-name having won a record-tying five Ballon d’Or awards .

Even though the soccer system in the U.S. is a lot less extreme than the ones in europe, it still is very intense. Many soccer teams in the Development Academy have at least five, 2-hour practices a week. They often go to showcases all over the country . If you choose to play a different sport as well, competitive or not, you will be kicked off the team.
When I was a little I played REC soccer from ages 4-7. Then as an eight year-old I decided to switch to club soccer. I played at the same club for five years. Last spring, my club was moving to the Development Academy league. I decided that the dream of soccer being your life, was not mine. I wanted to play soccer for fun, and just have a good time. I switched to a club call Lincoln Youth Soccer, which is more focused on just playing soccer. When I changed clubs I thought this team would not be very good because it is very small. It turns out I was wrong, after tryouts I didn’t even make the best team. Then I worked my way up to the best team and now I start every game. We ended the Fall season 10 and 0 and champions. This season we moved up a division and are currently third in state. As a result of us moving up I had the chance to play my old team. My new team won, 4-0. I realized I made the right decision, I was having more fun playing soccer then ever before. We were also winning more than ever before.
Last week my team played a friendly game against A.D.F. We lost 4-3. After the game our coach informed us that one of our opponents players is being recruited by FC Porto, one of the best teams in europe. I was amazed that someone from Portland could be recruited by a team on the other side of the world from such a young age.
This year I have come to the conclusion that soccer means something different to everyone. For some people soccer means a fun sport they used to play on Saturdays. For some like me, it means a sport they have and will play and love but still, they play to have fun. For others, it is a path out of their community or even their life. What do all these people have in common? They all love this game.

Why Fortnite is so addicting

The main reason Fortnite is so big is that of the community, and how much hype the game got being released on July 25, 2017. The game is mostly a meme. If you scroll through your Instagram feed you will not find one account without a Fortnite related meme. People like memes. Memes are addicting the see and addicting to look and find. Especially if the meme is something that you can relate to. For example take this meme here, that Mir kindly DM'ed me. As you may see Arnold Matthew Perlstein is very sad and doesn't want to go on a field trip to the main island in Fortnite Battle Royale. We all know Mr. Perlstein from the infamous show, The Magic School Bus, where kids go on rides in a so-called, well, you guessed it. Magic School Bus. Poor Arnold. This is a relateable meme because mostly everyone knows about Magic School Bus, and of course in Fortnite Battle Royale, there is a bus. Almost like it was a setup. So many juicy memes made from this piece of artwork known as the game Fortnite.

But, that's only one of the reasons people want to jump on the hype train and play Fortnite. Another reason why its so addicting is because of how fun it is. You have 3 objectives and those are too, kill people, grab loot, and get the heck out. Your main objective is to win the game obviously. but the problem is that you are up against 100 people. Now, not trying to brag or anything but I have 16 wins, 11 wins in squads, 4 in duos, and 1 in solos. I'd say I'm quite experienced having played the game for 3+ months. It's kind of sad when you think about it. Not gonna get into that. Anyways, people just keep playing to win. It's kind of a trend now. If you look up a regular kids school schedule, you will notice that homework is the first priority, (obviously) and then second is fortnite. This is the future right here. No matter what we do, gaming just keeps coming back to haunt us. We will always dream about the 1# Victory Royale, and when we reach it, our dreams become bigger dreams, we tell our friends, Now, our friends have higher expectations for us. "Wow, this kid has like 3 wins shes like a god at fortnite" this is the kind of attitude you will find living in 2018. I believe that so many people play just because they want to be cool because that's just how it is in this world currently. I've photoshopped a graph pyramid to show what is going on in fortnite.
At the top, we have Pro Player teams, such as C9, TSM, etc.
Nearing the bottom below Pro Players is streamers that play games like this for a living. Some streamers are TSM Ninja, TSM Myth, and C9 Shroud. Below streamers are gamers that enjoy the game and play it for fun and for wins, these are people such as myself, the list goes on and on. Below that, are the people that call themselves "gamers", and do play games, but they only play them because their friends do and they want to be like them. Below the "gamers" are the Noobs. The noobs, aimlessly walk around not knowing what to do, but they do come from other games. They are attempting to get to get better. I respect them. Then last we have Instagram followers that have no idea what the game is and they only play it because they are forced to by their friends and by the way the world works these days.

But by far the most addicting part of playing fortnite, is playing it with your friends, and having fun leveling yourself up, and completing challenges for in-game loot and currency. The in-game currency in Fornite Battle Royale is called V-bucks. V-bucks are used to but loot from the Daily shop, or used to buy items for special events. Now, V-bucks are very expensive in real life. If you do the math 1000 V-bucks is $10.00  meaning that one V-buck is equivalent to 1$ so, if one legendary skin is 2000 v-bucks you'd be paying $20 for one skin you will use once and then because its a special event you will unequip it in the future. In my opinion, this is dumb. That's why fortnite created the battle pass. In the battle pass you get to unlock for 950 v-bucks (<$10) it includes more than enough v-bucks for you to buy your favorite skins. This is a great choice for Epic Games to do this because it makes players more involved in completing quests and getting xp. And they gain a lot of money. You also gain skins that are free and other emotes, dances, backpack gear, and loading screens.

All in all, I would totally recommend playing fortnite no matter if you're a noob or not. You'll still have to get the hang of it and eventually you'll love the game. Fortnite works on practically anything. PC, some macs, Xbox, and ps4. Thank's for reading me!

Having An Older Sister

Image result for sister
I have the most amazing older sister. I can’t imagine life without her. She always has my back, and I try my best to have hers. She is supportive of my decisions, and helps me with my homework. I feel like having an older sister, or just a sibling in general can be portrayed as annoying or bad. Well that is not always the case.

There are different types of siblings. There are mean sibling that probably still care about you, but maybe not as much as others. There are step siblings that could make you feel like you are siblings by blood or not. The other type of sibling is type of sibling that I am so lucky and grateful to have. This type of sibling is nice, kind, loving, supportive, involved, and cares about you a lot! My point is that there are a lot of kinds of siblings and such a wide range.

It is really nice to have an older sister. I can talk to her if I have a problem and vice versa. We can share memories, good and bad. We go through a lot together, and it makes talking really fun.
Back when the American revolution was happening the average family had 1-6 children. Some families had over nine if they could afford it. Many of the older siblings would have to babysit the younger ones, and once the child was old enough they would have chores to do. I think that this would be a life that is a lot harder than the life that most people have. It would also probably mean that siblings wouldn’t know each other as well and wouldn’t be as close.

Things have changed since 1873 though. The average family now has 1-4 children not 1-6. This has also changed how much families are connected. Which also affects the siblings connection. I think that with less children siblings can be more connected and sisters are more meaningful.

How well do we really know each other?
You know those people that you see everyday at school or work, maybe you talk to them sometimes or say hi in the hallway, you might have known them for a few years now but do you really know them? Oh you do ok, what’s their birthday? What made them laugh the most? Where are they from? Were you surprised by how little you knew? No ok, well are you really sure about your answers or were you just guessing?
Earlier this year my peers and I had to do an activity in class where we each wrote down three things about ourselves that most people didn’t know and then had to read at least one of them aloud to the group. It was pretty easy for me to think of what to say because I was new to the school and I had only known these people for about 2 weeks, but as people started to read their answers out I was surprised by how amazed their classmates were, these were people who had known each other for a good few years now and yet they were still surprised by the things one another were telling them. To tell you the truth I was also surprised by what people said. That day I learned so many interesting things about my classmates and it got me thinking, I wonder what would happen if we took the time to really get to know the people in our lives?
Everyday we make tons of assumptions about people without even realizing it, we look at someone and infer things about their lives, job, where they are from and never bother to check if what what we believe is true. We see people and make stereotypes about them giving them labels such as rich, smart, stupid, popular, troublesome, dangerous, rude. We somehow think that people always fit into one category or trope and that everyone like them is the same but imagine if we actually spoke to one another and took the time to listen to the stories people have to tell. I think  that even if we knew just a little bit more about the people in our lives we would have a greater appreciation of them.
Especially now with social media we are fed lies about people and think that by scrolling through their instagram we can know everything about them. Think about it, you’ve just seen a picture of someone, they are in a beautiful, place with their friends, laughing having fun, looking amazing, but this is just one edited aspect of their life. They chose this picture to let the world see an image where they looked the best and in the nicest location and lighting, it could have taken them forever to get the perfect angle and background. Social media is a window through which we are permitted to view others “lives,” but only the most beautiful parts glossed over with smiles and fake laughter.  We can’t know a person just by seeing what they want others to see.  Knowing someone is about being there for them not just in the picture worthy moments but when they need a friend, someone who’ll listen to what they have to say, support them and help them realize that they don’t always have to be perfect, because life isn’t perfect.Image result for people on their phones

Who was a better inventor Leonardo da Vinci or Thomas Edison?

Leonardo da Vinci and Thomas Edison are both very famous and popular for there inventions, but the real question is, Who is more iconic and who is a better inventor? By better inventor I mean, which has invented items with more ingenuity and more skill and thought used to create that invention. Lets start out talking about Leonardo da Vinci, known more popularly for his architecture skills and his paintings, But he has made lots of inventions that improved modern day life by a whole new step.
Some of his inventions are..

  • The Flying Machine
  • Parachute
  • Anemometer (a device that measures the speed of wind)
  • The clock
  • Scuba gear
  • Revolving bridge
  • Triple Barrel Canon
  • Giant Crossbow
Leonardo da Vinci has created lots of other minor inventions that have also helped society. But, as a military engineer he made lots of inventions designed for military purposes. His creations are mainly based on physical objects that he created manually. Which is very different from Thomas Edison who thought up lots of different concepts, but tinkered with what he had and made some inventions that could be considered even more evolutionary. Some of his inventions are....
  • The light bulb (in my opinion his most important invention.)
  • The movie camera
  • The Phonograph (audio player)
  • Kinetoscope (shows the illusion of motion.)
  • Electricity Distribution
  • Tasimeter (measures infrared radiation.)
  • Carbon Microphone
Thomas Edison's biggest invention is definitely one of the most famous inventions. The incandescent light bulb has made a entire new renovation for the world. The light bulb lit up the night. Now to get to who is the better inventor. Leonardo is someone that I have known about since I was very little and has played a bigger role in my life so far myself,  I would choose Leonardo da Vinci. There are also aspects of what they invented that also show that Leonardo could be considered a better inventor because he has made lots of important inventions and a few not so important ones, but Edison
has made one enormous invention and a few not so important ones.
That is why I believe that Leonardo da Vinci is a more historic and
important inventor.

Social Status Based on Athleticism in Middle School

I go to a school that is very focused on performance, including in sports. My school has always been a big representative of Soccer and Basketball. If from the start of Middle School or Elementary School if you played one of these sports then you would have a higher chance of being liked or included in more dramatic areas of the social side of Middle School. Such as more known crushes, or just more information about the type of drama that usually goes on with the more "popular kids" in Middle School. They also give you the opportunity to play sports that do not grant you as much of a following with whatever you do in Middle School, such as Tennis, Chess, Track and Field, Cross-Country, and Volleyball. Although some people do still have a high reputation regarding social status while playing these sports, most of the people also play or have in the past played soccer or basketball. This "social system" also affects new kids in Middle School. Because all of the new people who have recently or currently played soccer and basketball tend to be more involved in drama

Golfing with Family

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to get dragged out of the bed at the crack of 10, and be told by your dad that your going to play golf? It happens to me a lot. Unless it is really cold or raining, I hear: "Come on get dressed. We are leaving in 10 minutes." It's not that I don't like Golf, (well, sometimes I hate it) but at times, it is the last thing I want to spend a Saturday or Sunday morning doing. I know the reason why my dad wants me to do it, because of all the time at home spent doing homework and other responsibilities, he feels I don't spend enough time with him and Golf changes that. However, sometimes we just want to leave the house. I sometimes object, because I don't want to go. He doesn't have any of it. When we go, we normally start out at the driving range to warm up, and then we will start. We always walk the course, so it means I have to talk to my dad. It isn't bad once we get going. Sometimes we talk, about life, or I will catch him up on what's happening at school, or sometimes we listen to the Willamette River rushing by.
Image result for waverley golf club portland hole 17           I am good friends with one of the Golf Pros there. His name is Brandon. Whenever we go to the club, and into the Pro Shop, he says something like how The Tank is back in action. I have played with him and some friends I know a lot. Even though I'm with friends, and a guy who has called me The Tank, it isn't the same as playing with my dad. A year and a half ago we had a bet. If I beat him three times, head to head, 18 holes, I would get a new set of Golf clubs. It took me a year and three months. I finally beat him. I realized something that day. I realized that playing 20 times in a year, which is basically 60+ hours of golf, it is fun playing for something. We play for something sometimes now, but I've never won. His end of the bargain is always that I have to play more with him. I don't mind much anymore. It is fun. I still don't have the clubs though, but he said we would get them. I have all of these memories of playing with him over the years, and sometimes my grandpa, who can beat us both. They are always good no matter how much I don't want to play at first.

Skiing, My Passion

Ski Jump
Skiing, weird to think about sliding on two planks of wood. Well thats how it all started.(https://www.skiinghistory.org/history/evolution-ski-shape)  Well compared to what we have with the fancy carbon fiber, and overly waxed bottoms. When I think skiing I think, fun with friends and the cold. skiing means fun, speed, memories, and wipeouts, of corse I don't do wipeouts (totally sarcastic.) One of my best memories while skiing is when I was going off a mildly small jump and i hit the little flag on the side, I WIPED OUT. Of corse My friends all saw it and still make fun of me for this. But you now get how the memories go while skiing, you will hold on to them for a long time. I don't understand why you wouldn't want to ski, I find it very fun and I get if you are scared. But there are such things as lessons. I know I am just getting at the same thing over and over again but I really want to emphasize that you should try skiing for memories, and for the overall fun of it. Ok but back to the skis, these matter. How many ski types do you think there are? 1, 2, 3, even 4? Well there are at least 9 (https://www.mountainheaven.co.uk/blog/an-introduction-to-different-types-of-skis/) 8 mentioned here but they have missed some such as telemark, or just general twin-tip skis (the standard rental skis.) Then you get into size and that is for a whole other blog. I will however get into the bindings, where is where you can get kinda weird not as weird as all of the skis though. You have telemark bindings which let you move your heel (not normal in skis) or rental bindings which are very heavy. When I call them the "rental bindings" that means the standard bindings in rental skis.

What if it was "draw" instead of "write?"

Rather on a glowing computer or an old fashioned sheet of paper, you write a lot in school. And I mean a lot. Essays, poetry, lab reports, paragraphs, random blog posts, slideshows. At the end of a typical school day you will probably have started at least two rough drafts, finished your essay about that one book you can’t even remember the name of, and have a really bad hand cramp. But what if school wasn’t like that? What if it was different? What if instead of this:
The girl sat in the emerald green grass
The wind rustling her hair
As a shooting star flew past
It was this:
Graphite
What if instead of a teacher telling you to “write an essay”, a teacher would tell you to “draw an illustration?”
For starters, the school supplies list would look a little different:
Digital
And it would probably cost more than the usual school list, because art supplies can be fairly expensive. Yet you don’t have to buy a pack of pencils that costs one hundred dollars, you could get the cheaper brands, like Crayola.
Instead of kids holding their pencils like this to write their ABCs:
They would hold them like this, to draw the ABCs:

But most importantly, drawing in school inspires and nurtures creativity. I believe that we don’t incorporate enough art into day’s curriculum. That doesn’t mean that we necessarily need to replace writing with drawing, but I think that we definitely should integrate more art into our everyday school lives. Art can inspire and motivate people, and we need something that will do that in our world right now.

My Beach, Our Beach

My Beach, Our Beach

I can see through the cloudy skies and brisk air, memories awaiting me. Just catching a glimpse of those blue waves, and stepping in the cushiony, wet sand I relive years of summers and Christmases on the very same beach. It’s the beach in front of my grandma’s beach house in Puerto Rico. The beautiful beach circles us with palm trees that wave at us to go in the water. When family surrounds people it may cause some worry, but it calms me, knowing I have my people. They are the ones who love, don’t ignore, and grant me my best qualities. Going one Christmas without them troubles me, even if only one family doesn’t come I feel as though we are missing a piece of the puzzle that creates our family. When viewing our beach I can see my family smiling back at me, every piece is there, the palm trees, the sandy waves, the sunny skies, and it all forms one beautiful picture. It's a picture of my past, my future and the overwhelmingly beautiful present. When storms hit, which they have, I fear what may happen, not only to the people and economy, but what’s left at the end of the storm. That is when I see the defeated palms, and the poor, rough waves carrying shattered glass and tears of the people. Beaches relax me, feeling the wind in my hair, sand in my toes, and watching the waves crash over my family playing football and boogie boarding. I could never pass up the opportunity to go to the beach in Puerto Rico with my family, hearing my grandma mix up my cousins names and listening to her chatter in Spanish. Time passes after years of my hair lightening and family tanning, and I don’t realize that everyone is finally grown. College awaits three family members, while one is already there, soon what’ll be left are the smallest of us alone in the house. I know that after everything the beach will still remind me of all that has past, and how we will always remember it.

Food Is a Good Thing

Have you ever just started craving a random food? Well that often happens to me, I will all of the sudden get a craving for a food I haven’t had in a while and i have that craving until I get that food I was craving and that can take weeks! Sometimes those are foods that I don’t have easy access to or I have to pay a lot for them because they are expensive. So I took a ponder. What if we had machines or someway to change food and make whatever we want. I know that sounds just like cooking, but cooking is a lot of work, it can be quite hard, and sometimes you don’t do it right. But I also don't want to go out and pay for food. What if there was a machine that had a lot off special buttons that asked you exactly what you wanted and how you wanted it and then it just came out of the machine in seconds. But this machine could make any food that you want, Cupcakes, burgers, pizza, mac and cheese. You could even get food from restaurants like Taco Bell or Chipotle ect. But this machine would be easily accessible from the convenience of your own home
There could even be a feature on it that gives you health facts and reminds you what you have been eating. You could even set it to give you restrictions on what you eat that day, week, month, year. It could tell you how many calories you have eaten or how much sugar you have eaten.
Although Imagine being the CEO of a bussiness and all of the sudden a machine took over and started making the food. I think the down sides of this would be how many jobs are lost. So many people work at retaurants and deliver food. Those people would loose their jobs because of these machines.

Lots of things, and trying to fit them under this umbrella

Note: Here is the link to the version with more pictures, because Blogger wasn't being nice to my layout. When Paul and Greg were explaining our new project, Revolutions, for the first time in Cultures and walking us through the Green Sheet, I have to be honest- I definitely was not listening… and instead telling myself that I would figure it out later. So, after a month or so, I read the directions, which were not the most straight forward. Apparently, I have to write this blog post, but for once I might be able to “spice it up,” as much as I can in this setting.

So, when I figured out I could pretty much write about anything, I did not have one of those Grease like moments where an angel comes out of nowhere to not only give me a cool idea, but sings it to me. You know what I’m talking about, right? No? Really? Look at the nearest picture, and if you’re still clueless: take a night off and do your research. Watch the movie. Please. Anyway, I had no idea what to start with. Why I don’t always love science class? Um, I can’t write about that… I mean, I’m pretty sure most people already know. All about the life of suffering and pain in theater? Nothing sounded right. So I thought for a while, and I decided, why not go for it and talk about some of my own, personal “stuff?” Then, I remembered that my class would also being seeing this, and how uncomfortably awkward that could end up. So I’m gonna try to keep this whole thing pretty general, and hopefully I won’t go off in a long, horrifyingly dull rant. Wait- not to worry, I’m also gonna try not to give you another lecture, as I honestly find it important that this is addressed from someone else’s point of view. Ok. Enough. Even I’m getting bored with this intro. I’m not about to make this into a formal thing or whatever, but let’s get started.

Something I’ve noticed a bit just since the beginning of this year is mental health and body image in our generation. As I started researching (stalking people’s Instagram’s, which you’ll see later in my photo source list) for this, I realized I have a lot of different things I want to mention, so I wrote about ten pages, which, mind you, is quite a bit for this assignment. So by now you just scrolled down then back up and are asking yourself why this is only eight… the next day, after I wrote my draft, I went to edit, and turns out it was all pretty cruddy, and I only had one page of “quality,” so I rewrote seven pages. So, yeah, that’s why it’s not very good. Anyways. When I say “eating disorder” what comes to mind? (I realize this might be a touchy subject, so apologies if this is upsetting.) For me, I saw this photo once, and it always re-enters my brain. This woman is standing in front of a mirror, continuing to see herself differently than what she is in reality. You, dear reader, are probably thinking something along the lines of yeah, got that, you really didn’t need to explain. But while you may think woah, have you ever gone farther into that? While this is obviously a very extreme case, (of anorexia ) this sort of thing is everywhere.

(We will go into this more later.) Anorexia is when people either restrict the amount of calories they eat, exercise compulsively, or force themselves to vomit, sometimes after binge eating. On top of that, anorexia can come with depression, anxiety, and other serious mental disorders. Three quarters of the people with anorexia are female, and at any given point in time, between 0.3-0.4% of young women and 0.1% of young men will suffer from it. It’s the third most common chronic disease among young people, after asthma and type 1 diabetes, and those between the ages of 15 and 24 with anorexia have ten times the risk of dying compared to their same-aged peers. Eating disorders also occur in things like ballet and wrestling. To make their weight class, some wrestlers use saunas and trash bags in order to lose water weight, or they may not eat for several days, which can lead to death. I said we would come back to body image being everywhere, and now we are.

Take the Kardashians. We’ve all heard of them. I don’t wanna go into a whole thing of accusing them of making the world a worse place, but… That girl to your right? She’s famous for being, well, to oversimplify a little, pretty and dramatic. In part, I do blame her (and equally her family) for filling the internet up with ideas about all of the eccentric ways you can “improve” your face. Now, I’m not saying changing yourself is a terrible thing. What I mean is that people are starting to take risks they don’t even know exist just to look like that, because apparently there’s a standard for everything. For example, some common side effects of plastic surgery are nerve damage, infection, blood clots, blood loss, and scarring. If you didn’t know that, pay closer attention to the little print at the bottom of commercials ;). Did you know that you can die from the anesthesia they use? And the infections that plastic surgery cause can lead to organ failure, and even death??

Models are similar, but whether it’s an ad popping up in your feed, a billboard you pass on the way to school, or posters outside a store, they’re stored in your brain, setting unreal expectations. What do I mean? I mean advertising is fine, (in most cases,) but most companies only use one type of person, a supposed “normal” body type. Speaking of “normal” body types… (see what I did there?) From head to toe, lots of us could easily point out thirteen (yes that is a random number) things that are supposedly “wrong” with our bodies, big or small, and that’s because of our old friend, standard. But wait… there are way more people who weren’t born with high cheekbones and slim waists, so how did those thin people rise to the “top?” Why did someone decide they were “better?”

Why is skinny considered beautiful? It’s possible that this has come from evolution, because men associated skinny with youth, fertility, fitness, and lower risk of disease. But as humans have grown, why haven’t their general tastes grown too? Models risk infertility, osteoporosis, and kidney damage as results of their unhealthy diets. Some have even admitted that every time a star loses weight, they try to catch up by losing more, creating an unhealthy “game.” And then there’s the special effects. There are close to no modeling pictures whatsoever on the internet that haven’t been touched up. When you see a picture, you think, I could never look like that, and the truth is that no one can.

Have you ever seen a selfie with millions of likes picturing someone curled up on their couch, wrapped in a blanket, watching Netflix, eating chips, and the caption about how boring they are? Instagram… Oh yes, we’re going there, because modeling is more than a business. At first Instagram was just grandmas showing off their little ones, (see above,) but now it’s very different. I read an
article by Sophie Kirby, who asked if social media is feeding eating disorders, and followed it with a story, which I’ll share a bit of with you. Instead of summarizing it all, I’m mostly going to quote him with a little background information, and see how that works.

After being diagnosed with anorexia six years before, and continuingly starving himself, Thomas said, "I believed that I needed to look a certain way to have other people like me and to make friends. I was constantly being bombarded with images of people with the 'ideal body,' photos of people's food and posts about dieting and exercise. I would constantly compare myself to other people online and in Instagram photos, and thought that if I could only be more like them, I would be happier. Looking at their pictures made me feel less about myself.” The narrative also included information about “Thinspiration,” posts by the “Pro-Ana” (Pro-Anorexia) community. Hold on. What does that all mean? It means that people who promote anorexia as a lifestyle choice have come together and made posts about encouraging people to continue to process.

On the other hand, while we typically mindlessly scroll through feeds, what we’re not thinking about is everything our parents tell us, the “boring” stuff. And while I don’t agree at all with a lot of the stuff my family says, they can be right about some of it. Just a little. A lot of people use the app to show off themselves, in a way that isn’t real. Posting pictures of yourself is fine, but it’s the “best” ones that we don’t think about. A lot of the time posts with more likes are taken in special places, showing off just the best parts of their life, and themselves. Whether it’s the right angle or sucking in your stomach, let’s be honest, it’s to make people jealous, or so they say say how great you are, and how boring their life is. But it’s the things behind the scenes we all forget about… just like dress codes. You may not think much of them, but maybe you’ll start now. I recently attended a twenty four hour diversity conference, where I spent some time in a female affinity group.

One of the many things we discussed was the truth about dress codes. First of all, women’s bodies are just generally more sexualized than men’s. Girls are told not to show their shoulders, bra straps, waist, legs, and too make sure their shirt isn’t too low, or revealing. I mean, God forbid we expose the skin we all have. Lots of dress codes are in place because women’s bodies might “distract” others, but it’s not their fault if someone can’t pay attention in class. There was once a rule in West Virginia where all holes in jeans had to be covered in duct tape, and that girls couldn’t wear black with red because a school counselor thought it was too “sexy.” The Washington Post posted an article entitled, “Why Dress Codes Can’t Stop Sexual Assault.
” Let’s take a look, shall we? Would you look at that! First sentence: “The idea that clothing contributes to rape is false- and incredibly common.” Hmmm… Next? “Deputy principal Cherith Telford at Henderson High School in New Zealand told female students that their uniform skirts must be knee-length in order to, ‘keep our girls safe, stop boys from getting ideas, and create a good work environment for male staff.’” Later… “Reagan Gomez argued that it wasn’t the responsibility of the girls to avoid being a temptation to grown men.” On the other hand… “In 1999, the Supreme Court of Appeals in Rome ruled that a woman wearing jeans couldn’t be raped, reasoning that a rapist couldn’t forcibly remove a pair of pants. Police question victims of sexual assault about what they were wearing, as though the length of their skirt is an indication of consent.” Some stats… “Violence study found that just 4.4% of all reported rapes involved “provocative behavior” on the part of the victim. (In murder cases, it’s 22 percent.) It also found that most convicted rapists could not remember what their victims were wearing.

Studies show that women with passive personalities, who tend to dress in layers, long pants and sleeves and high necklines, are actually more likely to be raped. In one study, one in three college men said that they would force someone to have sex with them if they could get away with it, and that has nothing to do with clothing.” I’ll leave you with that, and after that, a very cheesy picture of someone who looks like they’re trying to pursue a more healthy choice then all the stuff we just covered.

Horses are My Life

Horses I love them so much, I have always thought about horses now vs then. I ride a horse named Meg and she is a mare (A female horse is called a mare and a male horse is called a stally.) I ride every Tuesday from 6-7Pm but I am there from 5:20-8:45Pm, because I have to tack up, ride, then untack my horse.
Forward Stride Therapy Horse
"Meg is a 30+ year old Breeding Stock Paint. Interestingly, she is all black with no paint markings! She is essential to our Riding Program as she is great with beginning riders of all ages. Sweet, reliable, and solid are three adjectives that perfectly describe her!"

Forward Stride Therapy Horse
I also ride Bjorn, "he is an adorable little Fjord pony who is a valued member of there herd. He enjoys being in lead line lessons for his smallest riders" I ride without a leader because I am in an advanced classForward stride (My barn)

Horses used to be used in war and fighting, but now we ride them for fun and joy. When I mount up (get on the horse) I feel a rush of safeness and joy, I have always felt that way.

I think that horses and school are kinda the same because they both get my mind working but they change all the time. With horseback riding it's not that easy as if math is, math is hard for me, but back to what I was saying. School and horses and not easy but the more I ride/work the better I get and falling off a horse is kinda like failing a test. Try again and I will get it, I mean when I have fallen off meg or a different horse I get right back on. No matter the pain I am in. If I fail a math test I study, then try it again.

Pelé

Pelé was born October 23, 1940 in Brazil. His real name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento, and he got the nickname, Pelé, from his early school days. his real name is named after Thomas Edison.
He was arguably the best person to ever play soccer. he played center forward. when he was just 16 years old he made it to professional soccer. he played for Santos. at 17 we scored twice against Sweden in the World Cup finals and thats when his career took off. he still holds the scoring record to this day with 1,283 goals in 1,363 games. after the 1974 season, witch was his 19th with Santos, he retired from Brazilian club soccer. two years later he played for the New York cosmos, witch are the New York Red Bulls today. today he owns a coffee shop and commentates soccer games in Brazil. he also endorses products, and does a lot of charities. I think Pelé is cool because he came from such a small town and ended up being the best in the world.

The days in the life of a little sister

“You’re xxxxx and xxxxxx little sister right?” Or “you’re xxxxx daughter right.” To all those who have said one of these things to me or anyone else, listen and listen good. My name is xxxxx, and I’m just your average old 7th grader, I’m not my brothers. I’m me. I like taking pictures, hanging out with my family and friends, listening to music, and sometimes even school. The one thing I like most of all is being my own person.

For basically my entire life except the ages 0-3, I’ve been living in the shadows of my all mighty brothers. You see, my brothers are known as the ones who write good speeches, are good at public speaking, and amazing at every sport they play. I, on the other hand, is known as xxxxx and xxxxxx kid sister. I’m the notorious annoying little sister of the family. I’m the one everyone knows is there but doesn’t really acknowledge as someone that's worth their time and energy to at least learn the name of. Honestly, every once in a while I feel like a space filler that’s just there to make the Christmas cards look good. Not that we even have Christmas cards.
Right now all I know for sure is that I’m at an age where I’m still trying to figure out who I want to be. I definitely know that I don’t want to be xxxxx and xxxxxx kid sister. My goal is to be xxxx the artistic, funny, kind, confident 7th grader. Unfortunately in the process of doing that I lost myself and became my worst nightmare. The annoying little sister, the shadow. Every day I ask myself ‘how did I let this happen?’ And ‘why can’t I be more like them?’ Somehow it’s taken me nine years to realize that it’s because I’m not them, and no offense to them but I don’t want to be. Don’t get me wrong they have been the best role models a girl could ask for. They have basically mentored me through each year of school and each hard math test. So yes, I love them with all my heart but no, I don’t want to be them. I want people to think of me as a good person like people think of them.

I want to be known as xxxx the girl who takes amazing pictures, and xxxx the girl that's a lover and a fighter, or xxxx the great student and leader, and finally just xxxx plain and simple. Going back to what I said in the beginning if you are one of those people and you are reading this thank you for listening. I know I’m not the only one who feels overpowered by someone's amazing reputation, and I can’t speak for them because this is just my story. So please the next time you meet someone take the time to learn about them or at least their name because we are all more than just a sibling, dad, mom, cousin, uncle, or aunt. We are more than just a face we have feelings too, try to get to know us maybe you'll like who you meet. It might sound like having older sibling sucks but here are some good things. 25 good things about having an older brother

The Evolution of Video Games

Some of you may remember when the Atari Pong came out. It had blocky graphics and was extremely simple. But it cost around $100! Now today, we have amazing 4K consoles with thousands of games that cost even less! From 1972, the year that Pong was created, to 2018, video games have undergone a great evolution.

The History of Xbox

On November 15, 2001, Microsoft released its first game console, the Xbox. By May 2006, Microsoft had sold over 24 million consoles. It cost around $300 and it wasn't even all that powerful by today's standards.

The Xbox 360 was then released on November 22, 2005.  It cost around $300 and about 77.2 million consoles had been sold by April 2013. I even had an Xbox 360 myself!

Microsoft released the Xbox One on November 22, 2013. It cost $400 and as of now, Microsoft has sold over 26 million consoles. I bought one when it came out and I still use it today.

On November 7, 2017, Microsoft released the most powerful console ever, the Xbox One X. It cost $500 and can run games in 4K. That is extremely good graphic quality. It is very powerful and comes with 1TB of storage. It is more powerful than all consoles before it.

VR

Lately, Virtual Reality (VR) has become a huge trend. It allows users to play in virtual worlds with immersive graphics and settings. Some major contenders in the VR business are HTC and Oculus. But beware, VR can be very expensive and  a very fast PC is needed to run it.

In summary, video games have really changed since 1972, the birth of video games, until now, with immersive VR and extremely hardcore consoles.

The Golden Age of Aviation

I enjoy flying and am always fascinated about how a journey from the east to west coast of the United States that originally took about six months now takes less than six hours. But what caused this dramatic shift of travel time? What made an expedition that tests bravery, endurance, and health a matter of casual relaxation?
The Douglas DC-3 had the industry at a stalemate.
The Lockheed Constellation, another American offering.

To be honest, it wasn't a very fast transition. Although people immediately saw commercial potential in what literally started in a barn at Kittyhawk, passenger aviation didn't take off until the 30s, and when World War II emerged, the entire industry was grounded as the focus shifted to building fighters and military transports. However, during the post war era, a golden age for passenger aviation began, and the industry reemerged. The number of passengers increased, and airlines started to thrive. But, the most impressive advancement was in the field of manufacturing planes themselves. The United States left the second world war with more experience designing and building cargo planes. They were able to modify their designs to allow for passenger transport, and by doing so cornered the industry. In fact, around this time, about 90% of the world's air travelers were flying aboard American-built Douglas DC-3s. Other countries– Britain for example– had been focusing on bombers and other aircraft not suited for carrying commercial payload during WWII, and therefore had to rebuild their industry. But in order to gain the spotlight, they had to do something incredible. Alas, the Comet was born.

The accepted reasoning of aircraft propulsion was that jet engines did not produce enough thrust relative to the amount of fuel they consumed. But that reality was starting to slide, as piston engines were becoming larger and being loaded with superchargers to squeeze out what more thrust they could produce, and with these new efforts, their efficiency was starting to diminish. So the De Havilland company of Britain was given the task of creating the first commercial jetliner. During the design process, they used decoy designs to give the public the wrong idea, so when the final design of the Comet was revealed, the world was shocked. Even today, I consider its design to be awesome. Its sleek wings, elegant look and beautiful aerodynamics were straight out of the future. Its four ghost jet engines were integrated into the wing, making it look even more stunning. With this aircraft looking modern even today, you can imagine the impression it had on the public back then. Not only was it good-looking, but it was also more advanced. Instead of flying at the conventional altitude of 10,000 feet, it would cruise at 40,000 feet, where the air was thinner and weather was less problematic. But, to do so, it had to have a highly pressurized cabin, and while other planes had these kinds of cabins, no other flew so high.
A Comet 1, one of the original types.

The Comet made its maiden flight on January 9th of 1951, and immediately started receiving orders from airlines all over the world. It cut travel times in half, and became renowned for its pristine service and passenger comfort. To fly on this plane was considered a luxury mostly done by upper middle class and wealthier individuals. This is one of the reasons I envy the travelers that flew on this plane.

De Havilland was enjoying their new-found superiority in the industry, and produced several early models of the Comet. But within a year, things started to go wrong. Most travelers didn't question the safety of this plane, and when two Comets overshot the runway in 1952 and 1953, the pilots were blamed. However, De Havilland later corrected a wing fault that resulted in loss of lift. Not long after though, another Comet disintegrated in a thunderstorm just after takeoff from Calcutta, and in 1954, another accident occurred, this one far worse. While flying in perfect conditions near Rome, a Comet exploded during its climb. After these incidents, BOAC, the company operating the planes from Calcutta and Rome, grounded their fleet of Comets while an investigation occurred. but after no conclusions were drawn, BOAC resumed their operations as planned ten weeks after the incident. But, only two weeks later, another Comet suffered the same fate outside of Rome. With this, public confidence in the Comet shattered, and its Airworthiness Awards were revoked. De Havilland had no choice but to stop all operations of their once famed fleet. for months, an investigation was conducted, and the cause of the accident was revealed to be fatigue in the fuselage caused by pressurization and amplified by the square windows on the plane.

Unfortunately, this was the end of De Havilland's superiority. While they rushed to correct the faults in their plane, other companies were catching on. The same year that the Comet 4 was released, Boeing released their 707 and Douglas began their jet era with their DC-8. Then came Tupolev's 104 and Ilyushin's IL-62. These larger, and less expensive options offered a further flight range, and therefore were easily able to compete with the original jetliner. The Comet 4 had just 76 deliveries to airlines, a fraction compared to over 500 DC-8s and more than 1,000 Boeing 707s.
Douglas DC-8 (556 Deliveries)
Boeing 707 (1010 Deliveries)

Although it had its troubles, this plane's mistakes paved the way for the future of the industry. Boeing even admitted that they would have made the same mistakes if it weren't for the Comet. This aircraft may seem normal, but without it, transcontinental flight might still be a dream. The technological marvel of the Comet still inspires me and makes me wonder how humans can achieve such things. Sometimes, I wonder what the future will look like, and with that, transportation. What will the next generation of aerospace look like? Let's just say, "We're not there yet."

The Future of Performing Arts

We all have seen or heard of Cirque de Soleil. But I am focusing on the German Wheel. I do German Wheel, next to no one has heard of it. German Wheel is something is a like two heavy hula hoops put together with it is very heavy and it also has two foot pedals with straps so you can go upside down. When I first heard of it and pretty much fell in love.

This photo is of Quidam the Cirque de Soleil show my coach
was in.
My coach was in Cirque de Soleil Quidam, it is a show that toured all around the world that featured German Wheel.
I have become obsessed with watching mesmerizing videos and learning new skills.
There is one hold up if someone is asking me about what sport I do, I can’t really say “yeah I do German Wheel” without getting bombarded with questions. I once had someone picking me up from practice, think I was learning how to speak German. I have grown to not even mention it to spare me from showing photos and explaining. SInce then I have been eager to learn to do more tricks, it is always exiting and never gets old.
German Wheel is such a modern art. It is futuristic and mesmerizing. It is a great way to practice balance, strength and flexibility. All ages can do German Wheel in someway.

Indoor Cats vs. Outdoor Cats

About two months ago my family adopted two cats, Flutter and Cinna (as in Cinnamon). We had been planning to adopt one cat, but when we were informed that Flutter and Cinna had bonded our family could not resist adopting both. They love each other and are very sweet. They bathe each other, sleep together and most nights we hear a chorus of thumps as they play with each other. Recently we have been letting them go outside in our backyard under careful watch, and they love it. They have climbed trees and chased imaginary prey. Cinna even climbed into our neighbor’s chicken coop, though we quickly scooped him out. However our family often doesn’t have enough time to supervise them while they are outside so they don’t get to go outside as often as they would like to. Flutter has often looked outside trying to make us take pity on her Cinna often meows at the door, and once pulled down the curtains on the window of our backdoor. Someday we plan to let them roam in and out as they wish, but right now we are letting them explore new places bit by bit. When we let them go outside whenever they want I will be happy that they will have the freedom to do what they want, but I will worry about them. The street I live on isn’t very busy, but cars drive by frequently. Also I once saw a coyote running down the street perpendicular to mine. I don’t think that anything will happen to them, but the possibility is worrying.
According to the American Humane Society there are many risks of having outdoor cats
besides the ones I already knew about, including getting diseases, accidentally eating toxins
and getting stuck in trees while their owner doesn’t know where they are. Reading that
list could make a loving owner keep their cat inside for the rest of its life. However according
to another website I looked at keeping a cat indoors could lead to health problems as well.
According to that  website, boredom can actually make cats sick, so indoor cats must be well
entertained but according to Aspen Grove Veterinary if cats become too reliant on their
owners for stimulation they may become stressed when their owner isn’t home. So there are
varied opinions about whether cats should be allowed to go outside.

I think it is a difficult choice to make, but the decision is cat owners to make, and based off that
choice, know how to keep their cats healthy and safe. If only we could ask the cats what they
want. My cats are outside cats and though I may worry about them if they are safe it will be
worth it. And I think that they will be safe. My previous cat was an outdoor cat in three different
neighborhoods, including the one I live in now and he was fine. My cats are vaccinated for
diseases that are spread between outdoor cats and I believe that our neighborhood is very safe
for cats. My cats love exploring outside and I believe that they should have that freedom.
