Hobbies

Soccer Player Kicking White Gray Soccer Ball on Green Grass FieldHobbies - How They Affect Your Life
Floor Plan on TableHobbies, you might not have one, but I bet you have looked into a few. Whether it is sports, art, DIY, Technology, or gaming hobbies are the thing you are passionate about and do in your free time. If you are lucky, or if you have the right hobby, it could be your profession. One of my hobbies is Soccer, I have loved Soccer since the first time I played it in first grade. I have gone through many stages of learning in Soccer from at school recesses to rec and now club Soccer. All of these stages are beneficial in multiple ways, not just making me better at soccer or a better teammate. Lessons you can learn from things you are passionate about are the best lessons. This is because you learn the most when you are having fun with what you are doing. Many studies by top neurology websites such as Psychology Today have done research on the help of fun while learning. It bypasses a certain part of the brain called the amygdala which decides if the thing they are doing is effective. In a stress-free and fun environment students are able to learn a lot better. This same logic can also be applied to doing what you love. If you are doing your favorite thing in the world you are unlikely to be stressed and likely to have fun, therefore you learn better while doing your hobby. If people spent as much time on their hobbies as other more important things in their life they would likely get very good at it and learn a ton from what they are doing, for instance, if I loved DIY tech I would, in the process, learn a ton about all the tech that I am working with while still having a ton of fun. This has happened to me in my real life, I was looking into building a PC, and while I was doing research on parts I learned a ton about how PCs actually work and about electronics in general. The best part about that was that I still had a ton of fun doing it. Hobbies can also be beneficial to your life in other ways than just learning about your craft. They are a good way of dealing with stress, as mentioned earlier if you are doing something you love you are unlikely to be stressed out about it. Hobbies can also help your patience because you are usually spending a lot of time focusing on one project that you want to get done. Some hobbies such as team sports can help with teamwork (obviously) and communication, both of which are very useful skills that you can use in the rest of your life. In general, hobbies are a great thing that everyone should have, there are no drawbacks (besides cost) and they can equip you with very important skills for the rest of your life.

Tug of War the Next Olympic Sport

The Winter Olympics just finished but in the next Summer Olympics, I think they should revive Tug of War so it can be an event again. Let’s begin by talking about the rules of Tug of War. When competing in Tug of War you have a rope and in the middle, it’s marked red. From either side of the red mark, it is 13 feet away there is a white line on the ground. In order to win you need to make sure that the red middle line crosses over your own white line by pulling. You can have a maximum of 8 people on your team pulling. These people have to be under a certain amount of weight chosen by the category. There are referees and they can call three different commands. The three commands are “pick up the rope,” “take the string” and “pull” to start the round. This competition could take place with the track and field events like it used to in 1900-1920 Olympics. Tug of War is like any other sport, why can’t it be in the Olympics? Tug of War is just another sport for working on teamwork and synchronization. If you are not synchronized then your team won’t be as strong pulling the rope. It also helps you gain teamwork because of that. These are the reasons I think Olympics should bring back Tug of War.

New Sport, New Challenges

This year, I started playing basketball for my School. I decided to play because so many of my friends were trying out for the Middle School teams and it would be a fun experience. Much to my surprise, I made the “A team”! Although I play basketball at lunch and I’m okay at it, I had never played in an actual basketball game with a referee and a timer. A couple of practices in, my coach started talking about zone defense, the full court presses, and complicated offensive plays. I was so confused! Thankfully, my friends who play club basketball came to the rescue and explained the strategies of team basketball. Even now, halfway through the season, I sometimes need to rely on my friends if I have a question about a play. (rules of basketball HERE)
Another challenge in basketball is my size. I am one of the smallest kids in my 7th grade class. It is super frustrating for me to be so much smaller because it is hard to defend the big guys. They can just run me over and there is nothing I can do to stop them. Even when I put up arms over my head, they can just shoot the ball right over me. In games, I have been playing the point or shooting guard position, which works for a small person since I defend all small guys. Also, if I shoot, I’m afraid that my shot will get blocked. I’ve already been stuffed once and it was not a good feeling. I’m having fun playing basketball while learning the game with the help of my friends.

Skateboarding, a Misconceived Sport

For as long as most can remember, it’s been a common misconception that those who skateboard are almost always associated with drugs, alcohol, tattoos, vandalism, and crime. So how did people begin thinking this way?

Skateboarding is often associated with vandalism

Skateboarding has been around since about the late 1940’s. The first skateboards were created by children, which they did by attaching roller skate wheels to a board. Skateboarding was first invented in California as a way for surfers to ride and have fun when the waves were flat. Soon enough, skaters began experimenting with riding down steep hills, ditches, and pools. Skateboarding quickly became associated with crime when teens trespassed into people’s property, drained their pools, and had fun with their friends for a little while, until the police came. Already, skateboarders were assumed as trespassers and criminals.

The skateboarding troupe grew during the 1980’s, when drug use spiked. Listening to punk rock, vandalizing property with graffiti, and skateboarding were all promoted as a part of the culture. Thrasher, a skateboarding magazine founded in 1981, was a symbol of the skate-punk culture.

However, the skate community was never homogenous. While many of the skaters stuck true to the stereotypes, there have always been people breaking them. Over the years, the vandalizing, drug-using, and criminal skateboarding typecast has faded out. People are setting new records every day in the skateboarding world.

In our current year, many people still choose to view skateboarding as an accessory of rebellious teens.

Sometimes, I feel uncomfortable when I'm crusing down the blocks near my house, or when my brother and I make the whole neighborhood echo when we land tricks. There are always those older neighbors, mowing their lawns, staring at us with disapproving faces. At a young age, I was taught by just street signs that skateboarding was bad. In films and movies, skateboarding was almost always done by the gangster and thug characters. Even when walking to the grocery store, I saw signs with the all-familiar stick figure, this time riding a skateboard. The image had a big red circle with a cross through it. This sent a clear message - no skateboarding.

When skateboarding was first coined, it was dominated by men. There were no rules that stated it, but for many years, no girl had stepped foot into the world of skateboarding. In this day and age, this is no longer true. Jordyn Barratt, Arianna Carmona, Natalie Westling, and Poppy Starr are all female skateboarders breaking the boundaries of skateboarding today. Sky Brown, one of my biggest idols, an 8 year old girl, became the youngest female skateboarder to compete (against adults!) in the Vans US Open Pro Series.

Sky Brown

As a girl who enjoys skateboarding in 2017, I have never felt weird, or been put down about it
because I'm a girl. Our society has evolved so much in this way, and I'm proud to say it.

Today, skateboarding is a sport still categorized into a crime by some. Nonetheless, it has evolved into a sport that many continue to enjoy. Whether it’s drifting along an empty road with ease, or showing off the coolest tricks, skateboarding is an art that we can all enjoy.

Your Loss is my Game

I love playing basketball. I love the freedom. The opportunity. The teamwork. All of these are key for a game of basketball. When the game of basketball was originally invented it was to be a game for men. I’m glad today that the women's game has changed to be much more than it originally was. Today the game is much more aggressive for women then it was back in the 1890's and the women's and men's games are becoming more similar. And even though on the professional end of things the number of fans and the pay may still have a drastic difference I think the games are becoming more equal.
Defense important to a game of basketball. To win a game you only need to score one more point than the other team. So even if your team only scored one basket the whole game, you can still win as long as you play good defense and don't let the other team make a shot. Sure offense is fun, but I almost like the defensive game better. You never know what's going to happen and in my opinion hardly anything is more satisfying than blocking a shot.

When I’m out on the court all I’m thinking about is the game, the play we are running, the next shot and who I should pass to. I love the team element of the game; it makes the game easier and more interesting. I think the best players aren't the ones who score ten-million points a season, yes they are good players don’t get me wrong. I think the best players are the ones who are good payers physically and leaders. That's how I try to play balancing taking shots and dribbling with passing to teammates. I try to keep my team motivated even when we are losing by a lot. That's the type of player that I aspire to be and I know I can always get better.

School should be more like sports!

School should be more like sports. If I am not mistaken, then there are other kids like me, kids would rather be playing basketball, kids who would rather be dancing or even kids who would rather be acting. In the classroom every day, we sit in our seats, take notes, do work sheets, and listen to the teachers lecture us. The thing about learning in classrooms is that we’re not active. If we were to learn the way Logan LaPlante learns at his program, we would get some of the same curriculum and have fun doing it. For one example, he went to the Squaw Valley ski patrol to learn about mountain safety, and then the next day they learned about the science of snow and weather, and avalanches. Not only is this a good way to learn but it gets you up and moving. I feel like we could keep some of the class work, but also it would not be very hard to do fun things in classes. We could do things as simple as acting out a Shakespeare play in History.
Don’t get me wrong, I think Catlin has lots of fun, exciting extra things that most other schools in the world do not have, things such as ropes courses, outdoor trips, and plenty of cool co-curricular activities. Other schools in the nation don’t get these opportunities.
If kids had the opportunities to learn like playing basketball, then they could be able to approach things differently, acquire good teamwork, and successfully succeed in whatever they wanted to do with the help of their teacher or in this case their coach.
I think that if I were ever a teacher, I would listen to what the kids wanted to learn and how they wanted to learn it. Not only that, but I would also try to make whatever we were doing very fun and also very educational at the same time -- like when you practice learning a new move in basketball, you are learning and also having fun.
The thing about Logan LaPlante's technique is that it is like skiing: sometimes when you’re trying a new trick, you will fail. Failing is not always a bad thing because if you don’t ever fail then you’re not trying new things. Once you do fail you will be pushed harder and you will want to keep trying and keep trying until you get it perfectly.

Basketball - The Game About Buckets

Swish!!!!
Basketball - The Game About Buckets
I have always loved many sports such as soccer, tennis, and free swimming. But as I have grown older, and taller, I have come to like one sport more than most; this sport is basketball. I have always liked playing the game, even if I just started on a team last year. My dad installed a basketball hoop at the the top of our steep driveway when our house was built in 2004. Since I then, I have practiced for hours with my dad. I remember when I was little my grandma came to Portland and I spent lots of my time outside with her learning how to dribble. At first I could only keep the ball bouncing for short periods of time, maybe only twenty dribbles, and slowly I began to get better. Since then I have become a much better dribbler.

Basketball is a great a great way to take my mind off of homework for a while. This is helpful when I have a lot of homework. The only problem with playing basketball when I still have homework to do is that I might never come back in to finish it. Sometimes I play computer games too much on the weekends, and basketball offers a fun way to stop and go outside to practice. I also like going to the gym to practice with friends; this is a good pastime for me.

Lately I have been watching more NBA games and keeping up with the scores. These games show me new ways to play my game. There are many players that I admire, some of them include: Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, LaMarcus Aldridge, LeBron James, and Kobe Bryant. All of these players devote themselves to practicing and getting better every day. I do this too. I have been able to do many new moves every week this season. With my height, I can become a very good player and a force on the court. I continue to practice because I can always improve. Every game, whether my team wins or loses, I feel proud to to be playing my sport: basketball.

Sports, Exercise, and the Brain!

Sports has been a huge part of my life since, well, forever! All my life I have incorporated sports into my school life, and schedule. How it effects the Brain! Exercise is possibly one of the key points to having a healthy brain. Studies prove that physical and aerobic exercise are important for cognitive activity, and basically just thinking straight. A good 30 minute is workout is enough to make a whole day of thinking better! My family is very exercise related, me and my brother doing at least one sport per season and going for runs.
My cousin Jacob is a big part of my life and so is competition sports, so we make it a routine to go the gym and shoot hoops whenever he comes over to my house or vice versa. Because we want to get better, we make playing basketball together super competitive and I think that competition is motivation for me to do much better. Motivation is a key part in helping the brain to work harder, because I know I can't do something without putting my mind to it. When I try to do something, it usually comes out good but I am REALLY hard to get motivated! When I can't focus on something my mom tells me to just get up and do some jumping jacks, which actually helps! Exercise is great for the brain, and helps get you thinking. How it effect Emotions! Another thing exercise helps with is emotions! I get pretty mad easy, and get irritated at people, so going on runs helps me with that! Every single time I go for a run and come home I get a comment from my brother that I'm being nicer, and I guess it gets me in a better mood.
In Putnam city, there was a study where children who ran around for a half hour performed at least 45% better than the children that hadn't exercised. Also, during the class the children who had run around were behaving themselves and gave off a happy vibe to the teachers, and the observers. The effect lasted for about four hours, which is an amazing amount compared to the mere 30 minutes of exercise. Exercise is the #1 thing to cheer you up! What I think! Exercise is basically training your brain to be healthy, and keep in touch with emotions. A new year's resolution of mine is to not fight with my mom so much, so I'm gonna exercise more to keep in a better mood for her, and to be more pumped for schoolwork! The whole point of my blog was just to get you guys to realize how important it is for people, especially kids, to get active! I know it sounds cheesy, but it will help you to get better grades (if you don't go to Catlin...) and to just smile more. Do sports! :) Sources: http://www.patriotledger.com/blogs/health-cares/x1164582311/Exercise-and-the-Brain http://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/features/train-your-brain-with-exercise http://images.google.com/

No sports OR education!

Right now all my life is basically just sports and school. If I am not at school I am at the gym working on my serves for volleyball or my dribbling for basketball. I am a lucky girl who has the privilege to be able to even be on a sports team, before the 19th century I would still be trying to get an education.
The 19th century was where most of the privileges for women began, and that is not including sports. Of course the women had their little games and stuff but that was not the main focus it was trying to get a good education and supporting themselves and their family.
Ohio was the first state in the USA to let women get education. If I was living before that time I do not know what I would be doing or how feel. I have no other thing in my life besides those three things, volleyball, basketball and School. I think that I would be probably working to help get some money for my family.
I am very thankful that I am so privileged to be getting an education, and such a good one.

Sports were always around, for men. There was the Olympics held in ancient Greece in 776 B.C., women, of course, were excluded to this event, so they started their own games of Hera to honor the Greek goddesses who ruled over the women and the Earth. About four hundred years later Kyniska, a Spartan princess, won the  Olympic chariot race, but is barred from collecting her prize in person. If that were me I would personally be very angry for not being able to receive an award in person just because I am a women.

Ok, so I think you can tell that I love both sports and education equally and I am grateful for both so I am now done with this blog, thanks for reading! :)
