The Difference Between Guitars and Ukuleles

Image result for american flag electric guitarImage result for american flag electric guitarThe difference between the guitar and ukulele is mainly size, the number of strings, tone, tuning, and usage. The original guitar was much like a ukulele with the size and string count the same. If you think about it, the ukulele came before the guitar although the guitar is seen as an older musical instrument relative to the ukulele. Also, the standard size of a guitar is 3'4''. That is huge compared to the standard 1'8'' ukulele size. The picture on the left shows an electric guitar which has 6 strings. Another difference is the usage and tone. The ukulele is more known to use a lighter, silkier tone which is suited better with some styles of music like light music, folk music, even sometimes used in country, soul, or alternative.

It is used in those because the guitar can have a ranging sound from grungy metal to light and soft. It can be distorted and changed with pedals and amplifiers or you can change it by your way of picking of using your finger. My personal preference is guitar because it can be heavier with more drive and more accessible notes. The picture on the left is a ukulele which has four strings. One final addition to the guitar is that there are many types of guitars. There are acoustic, electric acoustic, electric, resonator, steel, archtop, flamenco, and twelve string guitars.

  1. Dear Cpower23,
I liked how in the beginning of your post you summarized all of the differences before going into depth. One question I have is; Even though you like the guitar better do you still play the Ukulele?
    Sincerely,

    1. Dear Purplesealsonpluto,
Thank so much for your kind words. I do play guitar, but I have somewhat dropped ukulele, I still play it a couple times a week, but I have stopped taking lessons.
      Thanks,

  2. Dear Cpower23,
I really enjoyed reading your post because I have always thought that Guitars and Ukulele were the same thing bout I guess you proved me wrong, I liked how in your post how you talked about the difference in the strings because just looking at them they loom the same but they really are not. What inspired you so write about the differences?
    Sincerely,
    LoveAndGelato

  3. Hi Cpower23,
I really liked how you explained the different types of music played by each instrument. I was wondering if there are also variations of ukuleles, like electric ukuleles or something?
    Sincerely,
