Rather on a glowing computer or an old fashioned sheet of paper, you
write a lot in school. And I mean a lot. Essays, poetry, lab reports,
paragraphs, random blog posts, slideshows. At the end of a typical
school day you will probably have started at least two rough drafts,
finished your essay about that one book you can’t even remember the
name of, and have a really bad hand cramp. But what if school wasn’t
like that? What if it was different? What if instead of this:
The girl sat in the emerald green grass
The wind rustling her hair
As a shooting star flew past
It was this:
| Graphite |
What if instead of a teacher telling you to “write an essay”, a teacher
would tell you to “draw an illustration?”
For starters, the school supplies list would look a little different:
| Digital |
And it would probably cost more than the usual school list, because art
supplies can be fairly expensive. Yet you don’t have to buy a pack of
pencils that costs one hundred dollars, you could get the cheaper
brands, like Crayola.
Instead of kids holding their pencils like this to write their ABCs:
They would hold them like this, to draw the ABCs:
But most importantly, drawing in school inspires and nurtures creativity. I believe that we don’t incorporate enough art into day’s curriculum. That doesn’t mean that we necessarily need to replace writing with drawing, but I think that we definitely should integrate more art into our everyday school lives. Art can inspire and motivate people, and we need something that will do that in our world right now.

Your challenge is a good one, but I don't think it needs to be either/or. Creativity, for some of us, comes in the form of words. I can't draw a stick figure that looks like a stick figure. When I doodle, I doodle letters. Creative canvasses should be options for both of us.
ReplyDeleteThorncat- I agree that we don't really do that much art, and even though I'm bad at drawing it's still useful. Would you rather practice art digitally or with an art supply and paper? Which do you think teachers would rather have in their classes?

Hi Slim Celery!
DeleteThanks for reading my post! I'm fairly new to digital art, and it's a hard transition. It takes me a lot longer time than traditional art, but I enjoy it anyway. I personally think I'm better at traditional art. It might not show in the pictures, they were last minute. I swear I can draw better! I really enjoy water color, so I guess I prefer traditional art. I think that teachers would prefer traditional art in their classrooms, because digital art can be expensive! Especially with little kids that can break everything.
Thanks for reading!

ReplyDeleteHi Thorncat,
ReplyDeleteThat completely makes sense to me! It's definitely true, we don't do that much art in school and are often writing essays and such. I admit, I'm not the best drawer, but I enjoy it, it's relaxing and comforting. It would be a bit challenging to pick out the exact words through a drawing, but that would special in it's own way. What does the piece of art say to you? What words come to your head? -chopsocckitty
Hi Thorncat,
ReplyDeleteI really like how you talked about how things would be different if we were able to use our creative side in school more. I am not a talented artist, but I do believe that everyone can be involved in art. I think that we all have a need for art in our lives. Different people are artistic in different ways, so how do you think schools would adapt to everyone's ideas of art?

Dear Thorncat,
ReplyDeleteI really liked reading your blog post because I agree with you that writing what feels like 2 million words a day can be tiring and we should have more options to express ourselves in school essays and such. What is one assignment you wish you could have done a drawing for?
Sincerely,
LoveAndGelato
Dear Thorncat,
ReplyDeleteI really liked your blog post, I love pretty much all forms of art and totally agree that people shouldn't have to write as much and should be able to express themselves in other ways in school. I was wondering, what's your favorite form of art?
Thanks,
Freddy
Hi Freddy!
DeleteThanks for reading my post! My favorite form of art is watercolor, what's yours?
Thanks!
ThornCat
Dear Thorncat,
ReplyDeleteI liked how you really believe in drawing instead of writing. One question I have for you is; What is your favorite part of being an artist(assuming you are one)?
Sincerely,
Purplesealsonpluto
Dear ThornCat,
ReplyDeleteI agree with with what you wrote about drawing and doing more art in school, but can't people choose? Should there be the option of either writing your assignment or drawing it? Also, at Catlin we have a very good arts program compared to a lot of other schools, especially public schools. This isn't what your blog post was really about, but do you think there should be better funding for the Arts in schools?
Thanks :)

Hi Soccer4life4415!
DeleteI'm very grateful for the opportunities to practice art at my school. At my old elementary school, we did a parent led art project once a month, and not much else besides the occasional doodle. Public schools often seem to be underfunded, and because of that I've noticed that there often isn't an opportunity to do art. I do think there should be better funding for art in schools, art is an important thing to learn, at least in my opinion :).
Thanks for the good questions!

Hi ThornCat,
ReplyDeleteI totally agree that drawing needs to be more of a regular thing in school. I would love to achieve this goal you have set. When I draw during classes it helps me focus and some teachers don't believe that so they tell me not to draw in class. I think that they should let me doodle in class because if doodling is not helpful for them that doesn't mean that it is not helpful for me. I love drawing so much and your drawings are super cool! Thank you for brining this topic to people's attention.
Sincerely,
pugandllamarama
Dear ThornCat,
ReplyDeleteI agree I wish we drew instead of writing essays and Pees paragraphs. I have only resonantly gotten in to art and I don't know why it is only resonantly. I know that their are many different types of different art. But what is your favorite(ex. drawing, painting etc.)?
From,
Isabella Johnson
