Alfred Nobel was a very peaceful inventor and never intended for his inventions to be used in war. He is the inventor of dynamite, or as some people call it TnT. Alfred Nobel grew up in Sweden and was one of the many sons of Immanuel Nobel who was also an inventor. He used to build bridges and buildings in Sweden. Mining back then was a very gruesome task and took very long amounts of time to mine a mountain or metals. With his understanding of Nitroglycerin and silica, he mixed the two to create a paste.
The paste is called dynamite. After he invented this tool, he presented it to the mining corporations, which loved it and started using it in mining. Dynamite was originally used to blast rock. Dynamite back then brought a lot bigger boom than gunpowder or any other explosive device used. Dynamite was a huge invention and was used solely in mining.
Like lots of inventions created to benefit society, the military became involved. The military took this invention and started using its formula to create bombs and use dynamite as a weapon. This was not what Alfred had in mind. He just wanted dynamite to be used as a mining TOOL, not a war weapon. Alfred felt very guilty and wanted to make up for this catastrophe.
That's how the Nobel Peace Prize was born. When Alfred died on December 10th, 1896 it stated in his will to put most of his wealth to create 5 prizes. One of them was the peace prize. Many people (including myself) believe that he created the Nobel Peace prize because he felt very guilty for creating a device used to kill many people. The Nobel Peace prize is now the largest and most respected peace prize in the world.
Alfred Nobel was an amazing intellectual person who believed in peace. He affects my life a lot and his ways of thinking represent mine too. Today in the world people obsess about war, who has the most power, and money. I believe that people should focus more towards peace, arts, and science. In the United States, the military gets involved in too many inventions that were designed NOT for the military, but for whatever they were created for. Sometimes they may be designed for mining, medical research, or delivery services but the military can always find a way to attach a gun and some missiles and use it to kill thousands of people. Some examples include dynamite, nuclear power, and gunpowder.
It is very unfortunate how the military changes peaceful inventions and always find a way to kill people with it. Alfred Nobel was a very nobel man who believed in peace and I wish there were more people similar to him and not like some of the many horrible Americans in the world who only care about war, oil, and money. There is hope for peace in the world but I think humans are centuries behind such an out there idea like that.

Thank you for your thoughtful post - you've identified a really important truth about technology. Discoveries, and the technological implications of those discoveries, are amoral. TNT, nuclear energy, gunpowder, genetic manipulation: all can be used for good, and all can (and have) been used for evil. It's people that make the difference.
ReplyDeleteInterestingly, most discoveries are a product of the times rather than an individual genius. We tend to hear about the "great men of science," but that's not really how the process works. If Alfred Nobel had not discovered TNT, it would have been someone else. I believe that what he contributed that was uniquely his was the sense of morality that accompanied the discovery.
Met vriendelijke groetjes from Amsterdam,
Mark Knight
Thank you for taking the time to read my post and comment on it! I agree with you that many inventions like the ones you mentioned have sadly been used for killing and destruction and not their original purpose. What do you think will be the next biggest invention and breakthrough that will created for good, but be used for war?

ReplyDeleteDear Penguin who is flying,
ReplyDeleteI really thought it interesting learning about how dynamite was discovered. I thought it was cool how the same man who created such a big deadly device also made the Nobel prize, one of the awards of high honor to receive. What was Alfred's intentions when he first made TNT?
-Khulan
Thanks! Alfred's first intentions were to help miners mine rock and other substances and never wanted it to be used to kill people.
DeleteHi DaFlyinPenguin,
ReplyDeleteThis is really interesting I did not know the the nobel peace was prize was also related to the invention of dynamite. The invention of dynamite back then must have been very useful and helpful. Do you think if dynamite was not invented we would not have such big wars?
-Advay K.
I believe if dynamite was not invented by Alfred Nobel, there would still be large wars. Someone else would have invented it or people would use other things to kill people like guns or nuclear bombs.
DeleteHi DaFlyinPenguin,
ReplyDeleteI thought your blog was really cool! I didn't know that the Nobel Peace Prize followed the invention of dynamite. Dynamite would have made making train tunnels much easier. I was wondering, why did some people call dynamite TNT? The words don't seem to have much in common.
TnT and dynamite are different. However, they both serve the same purpose of exploding things.
DeleteHi DaFlyinPenguin,
ReplyDeleteGreat Blog. I thought it was really interesting. I loved how you told the story of this great Man. I thought it was nice how you started with talking about Dynamite and the why the following events led to him leaving the money in his will for the Nobel Peace Prize and others. I also liked how you then compared this to your own views. Do you think that Dynamite is also dangerous for mining, and if not, why not?
Best Wishes,
Britt
Hi Britt! Thanks for reading my blog and commenting on it. Dynamite, like most explosive devices, are dangerous. Things that people think are not dangerous like driving to work, filling up their car with gas, or even eating a sandwich is dangerous. It just depends how responsible and cautious you are while using things like cars or dynamite. Cars burn gas and can easily explode! So to answer your question, dynamite can easily kill you, but experienced miners that use dynamite use extreme caution not to kill themselves.
DeleteDear Daflyinpenguin,
ReplyDeleteInteresting blog! I had no idea that the Nobel Peace Prize was created because of Alfred Nobel's guilt. Why didn't he patent the Dynamite stopping it from being used for purposes not intended?
Hi Shrimp Jesus (love your name) thank you for taking the time to read and comment on my post! Alfred Nobel never intended for dynamite to be used in war and probably never came across his mind as a war weapon. If he did patent it and say it couldn't be used in war I still think that warmongers would find a way to use it and/or make a paste very similar to it that explodes.
DeleteHey Daflyinpenguin! I thought it was so cool how you talked about how there are so many different things related to dynamite. You did a great job including all of it in an easy to understand way and order. What did Alfred Nobel spend his money on to create such a prize. Is the paste you described inside the dynamite? What does TNT have in common with dynamite, why do many people call it that?
ReplyDelete-Tanner
Thanks for reading my blog! Alfred Nobel basically used his very large fortune to found the Nobel Prizes and make a vey large endowment to fund the prizes. The so called "paste" is inside the sticks of dynamite and is the stuff that explodes.
DeleteHi DaFlyinPenguin,
ReplyDeleteI really like how you talk about Alfred nobels life. I was wondering why Alfred nob l made the Nobel peace prize. I was also wondering if people back then thought receiving a peace award from the inventor of a substance that was used for destruction? Great job
-catie
DaFlyinPenguin,
ReplyDeleteI really like how you talk about how Alfred was trying to do the right thing. Just because he created dynamite doesn't mean he's bad. What were the 5 categories for the Nobel Prizes?
Why didn't he have a math category?
Lauren Mei
Hey DaFlyinPenguin,
ReplyDeleteI really liked how you said your opinion on wether Alfred was doing the right thing. I was wondering if you think the Nobel Peace Prize should be awarded to environmentalists as well as peacemakers.
-Emma
Dear Penguin,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading this post. It was really descriptive. Do you think giving out Nobel Prizes to people makes the world a better place? Do you think that dynamite helps the world?
Elise
Dear DaFlayinpenguin,
ReplyDeleteI really liked how you made your story personal. What do you think the world would be like if Alfred Nobel didn't invent dynamite?
Kai
Hi Kean,
ReplyDeleteI liked how you talked about how Alfred Nobel affects your life. I was wondering, how was the name TnT invented?
-Ibrahim
Hi Kean,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your post because you talked about how this affects your life. I was wondering how you picked this idea?
Sincerely,
Ramya
