This has been a question many people have asked. There are four men who are involved in the answer to this question that we are still puzzling about today. Hans Lippershey, Zacharias Janssen, Jacob Metius and Galileo Galilei.
Hans Lippershey was an eyeglass maker and the first person to apply for a patent on the idea of a device that could magnify what you are looking at three times. People argued against him trying to patent this idea, saying that he stole the idea from another eyeglass maker, Zacharias Janssen. Jansen and Lippershey lived in the same town, and were both eyeglass makers, but there is no proof that Lippershey made his telescope alone. In the end, Lippershey got credit for creating the telescope and Jansen got credit for creating the compound microscope. The topic of who created the microscope is debated as well, but as the article, “Who Invented The Telescope?” By Lauren Cox reads, “while Jansen is credited with inventing the compound microscope. Both appear to have contributed to the development of both instruments.” meaning that both men appeared to have both worked on creating the microscope and telescope.
Soon another man, Jacob Metius was thrown into the mix. Jacob Metius applied for a patent on the telescope a few weeks after Lippershey did. The government soon turned down both offers for a patent because of counterclaims. In the end, Jacob Metius got a small reward but Lippershey was paid a lot of money to have his telescopes remade and sold or used.
Lastly, where is my thought in all of this. Personally, I feel that there is so much more out in the universe that has not yet been seen and just like Galileo, I want to use something we already have and see the world and the universe in a new way as he used the telescope to look at the stars.
Four men who are all considered to be the creator of the telescope, but who actually made the first one? Many people have been wondering this, and many more to come are going to ask this question as well.

Foreshadow,
ReplyDeleteThis was a particularly interesting blog post for me, as I believed Galileo was the only maker of the telescope, and it is so mind boggling to know so many other people also contributed to the invention of the telescope as well! Did you know about these hidden figures before looking into the research? This is a visually appealing well written post, and I enjoyed it very much!
Keep up the good work!

Forshadow,
ReplyDeleteWow! I always thought that Galileo came up with the first telescope invention, but he just built it with some tweaks based off another idea and discovered planets. It is so unfair that these hidden figures don't get any credit!. Do you have a telescope at home?
Well done!

Lion,
DeleteThank you so much for commenting! When researching for this post I was shocked about how many people were involved in the creation of the telescope! And I agree, it is unfair! To answer your question, I do have a telescope at home! I would love to use it more but as where I live there is so many clouds, I don't get to use it much.
With thanks,
Foreshadow
Dear Foreshadow,
ReplyDeleteHow interesting to think historians are still arguing about who invented the telescope! The telescope is a very important instrument for astronomy, so I wonder why the origin is so mixed up. Who do you think REALLY invented the telescope?

Hey Foreshadow,
ReplyDeleteThis blog post was amazing. It is so cool that you are recognizing the people who helped create the first telescope. I had never heard of those other people before but thanks to you I do know. How do you think the world would have changed if the telescope wasn't invented? This was a brilliant piece and fun to read,

Foreshadow,
ReplyDeleteBefore I read this blog post the only person I knew that was related to inventing the telescope was Galilei. The post was really interesting and was very detailed. The telescope is definitely a very important of history. What year was the telescope first created?

Hello Foreshadow,
ReplyDeleteYour article was really interesting! I wonder if Lippershey, Janssen, Metius or Galilei ever imagined the telescopes that scientists use now! They can see all the way to the edge of our solar system!

Hey Foreshadow,
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting blog! I only knew about Galileo, not the other people. Why was Galileo given some credit if someone else first invented it and he only tweaked the design a bit?
Nice post

Hi, Foreshadow!
ReplyDeleteI learned a lot in this blog post. You pieced together your information eloquently and elegantly, and the images you supplied complemented the information perfectly. You say in the last line that "[you] want to use something we already have and see the world and the universe in a new way as he used the telescope to look at the stars". What sorts of technology do you think you could use for this task? Do you have any ideas already in the making? If so, I'd love to hear them!
Thanks for the post!
