Social Media in the 18th Century

Most people in our era think if social media as an app on a device that uses data, and allows you to communicate with friends, family and new people. But in the 18th century, that is not what social media was like. First of all, touch-screen phones had not been invented. In fact, people during that time period didn't have anything close to a smartphone. The only way they could communicating with people far away was through telegrams… Second of all, no one had come up with the idea of apps for  phones (Snapchat, Instagram, Tumblr, Facebook, etc…) because obviously, they didn’t have them.

In the 18th century, there was a different widespread meaning for social media. They didn’t have any version of a device. So instead, they used coffeehouses and art salons to spread news, share ideas, and meet new ppl. The historian Brian Cowan describes English coffeehouses as "places where people gathered to drink coffee, learn the news of the day, and perhaps to meet with other local residents and discuss matters of mutual concern." This was a way for people to catch up on the current matters of the world, and be in a social environments!

In theory, English coffeehouses and Persian salons were almost as effective as social media. They allowed people to do similar things: communicate with multiple people, and hear about the hottest new gossip/ important world news.

In my opinion, social media then and now are both very similar, even though they were, and are not executed in the same ways. Social media is important to me because it allows me to meet new people, share things I find interesting, and build knowledge about many things. I use many apps, such as Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr, Pinterest, and YouTube. They are all entertaining, and I learn new things!

The video linked below describes how coffeehouses and salons were used in the 18th century

  3. Hi Anna!

This blog post is so cool! I know how much you love your social media, but reading about the history is so interesting! I find it interesting how we have evolved from talking about the latest gossip as a community in a coffeeshop whereas now we stay locked away on our screens. Again, cool post!

  8. ACS,

I absolutely love this post! I love how you explained how social media was before! I find it quite funny how before, social media was spreading news, and sharing ideas, because when ever you think of social media, you would associate it with (snapchat, twitter ect.) Do you think people used the term social media when what they did was share ideas and spread news?

    Great work!

Really neat post! Its so interesting to step back and see how much we have changed in our social lives. I really enjoyed the bit about coffeehouses and was wondering, what is the main purpose of a coffeehouse and how often would someone go there?

This is so cool! I would have never thought that it would be possible to have social media in the 18th century! I loved how you talked about what social media does for you, and how it helps you meet new people. Did you think that social media couldn't be possible without smartphones and apps before researching this topic? Great job!

  14. GeorgeJ,
I agree, coffeehouses were a cool way to interact before phones! In my opinion, I think our generation has become less social in the perspective of personal interaction. But in others like communicating, I think we have become more social.

Thanks for asking this great question. I do not know exactly when these medias were invented. However, I do know the general time periods. Coffeehouses and Armenian salons began in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Wow, this was a very interesting post! I never knew who came up with social media, and always thought it was just facebook, twitter (ect). Why was coffee houses the place where ideas were shared? why not a public library or something like that?

  24. ACS,

I found this post super interesting and I love how you share how the first social media was in coffee houses where people discuss the latest gossip and trends. I never knew that social media was that old. Do you think social media is more of an entertainment industry than a industry that gives you the latest news and gossip?\
