The Fair Of The Future
The Chicago's World Fair of 1893 celebrated the 400th year since Columbus made his first voyage to the new world. This world's fair was famous because it was not only a huge celebration, but it also produced many firsts to the world.
Over 26 million people visited the fair over 6 months time, and enjoyed sights and experiences that they had never seen before or experienced before. This fair was the first time that foreign countries from all over the world could have their own pavilions that displayed their cultural arts, industry, etc....
The fair was futuristic and many inventors all over the world displayed their inventions. The tourists were awed by new technological advances that they had never seen before, such as neon lights, electric railway, washing machines. Another wonder that impressed them was the fact that the city of the fair was completely electrically light at night and this was something that they had never seen before.
This fair had the worlds first Ferris Wheel which was invented by George Washing Gale Ferris Jr. It was 60 m tall and the rides lasted 12 minutes. People rode in capsules that could hold several passengers. This was considered a very daring ride and some of the passengers would panic and crawl at the walls screaming. The Ferris Wheel ride was so popular, that was how the fair made so much money.
Besides being famous, the fair is infamous because murders happened there. A man named Patrick Prendergast assisnated Chicago's new mayor on closing day (the celebration had to be canceled). More shocking is during the fair a serial killer named Dr. H.H Holmes, lured unsuspecting guests to his hotel, The Castle. His hotel was littered with traps to kill and torture people. After the fair police found lime pits filled with skeletons and parts of bodies in the furnace. Police confirmed 9 kills, he confessed to 27 but, it is suspected that he killed up to 200 people in his hotel.

Dear PeanutButter,
ReplyDeleteThe World Fair is an excellent representation of American scientific culture throughout history, and you talked about a certainly interesting one indeed. I loved hearing about the Ferris Wheel and the murders. Did the hotel murders happen near the fair?
Thanks,
LD
PeanutButterIsBad,
ReplyDeleteThe World Fair is such an interesting and creative topic to write about! Like DerpBoy, I too enjoyed reading about the ferris wheel and the murders! The blog post was extremely informative, yet I am left with so many questions! Why would guests follow a stranger into his apartment? How could Dr. H.H. Holmes do such a thing!? Great post, it was a particularly interesting read!
Oh, did you hear the rumor about the peanut butter? Yeah I don't want to spread it...

PeanutButterisBad,
ReplyDeleteJust on the side note, I hate peanutbutter!
This is such a unique post! I love you explained the different stages of the fair.
I am little bit confused of why would Dr. H.H Holmes want to kill so many people?
Keep up the great work!

Lion,
DeleteThank you for reading my blog post about the fair. I do not know why Dr. H.H Holmes would kill so many people, maybe he was insane?
PeanutButterisBad,
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting blog. I had heard of the World's fairs, but had just heard of the pleasantries such as the inventions and ferris wheel, but didn't know about the murders. I guess with a convention so big, something is bound to go wrong! Was this the first world's fair?

Dear PeanutButterisBad,
ReplyDeleteThis is a very intriguing post. I love how you talk about all of the technological advances that this fair showed the world. I found it very interesting how the ferris wheel was a very scary ride but now it's more of a relaxing one (at least for me). Do most big events like this have murders?

Hi PeanutButterisBad,
ReplyDeleteI liked a lot that you gave us such interesting facts about the fair. Is the first Ferris wheel in a museum now? How many futuristic things were at the fair? Great Job!!!

Hey, PeanutButterIsBad!
ReplyDeleteThis article was awesome. Because of the obscure topic, I never would have learned about this fair otherwise! Do you think in the future there may be another technological fair just like this one filled with equally groundbreaking inventions? That's an interesting idea... what would be showcased in the fair? I can't even imagine!
Thanks for the article!

Hey PeanutButterIsBad,
ReplyDeleteThis blog was very interesting! I never knew about this fair and I would have never known about it. How did they advertise the fair, since there was no smart phones or computers?
-Sushi is the best!
Hi PeanutButterIsBad,
ReplyDeleteI really liked your blog post, especially all the pictures and the very interesting ending with all the murders. I loved how you explained the ferris wheel, with the passengers clawing and stuff. One thing I was wondering was if the ferris wheel was the scariest ride in the entire fair, or were there rollercoasters?
Good job!

PeanutButterIsBad,
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting subject. Are Dr. H.H Holmes reasons known? If so was it planned? I really liked learning about this and I think this was a great choice for a blog post.

Hi PeanutButterIsBad,
ReplyDeleteThis is a subject I would have never thought about, but this post definitely let me ponder upon this subject. Have you ever been on a Ferris wheel? If so which one? Did you enjoy it or do you think you would? All in all awesome post!

Peanutbutterisbad,
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of this topic before and I find it so cool that you wrote a blog post about it to share it with the world. If there were so many new inventions do you think some people tried to steal others work? I thought this blog post was super cool and ironic because the last name of the murderer was Holmes who also happens to be a famous detective in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's books.
Thanks,
WB25
Hey PeanutButterIsBad,
ReplyDeleteI never knew that the Chicago World Fair amazed so many people with new inventions, and it was really amazing how you really put it down as if it could've been it's own revolution for technology. I've actually heard of the murders that happened there before, and I though it was great how you mentioned them. My question for you is: Do you wish you could've gone to the World Fair?
Great Article!

Hello PeanutButterIsBad,
ReplyDeleteThis is a very cool blog post. I say that because this is very a obscure topic you found out and wrote about. I can't believe someone back then was a serial killer, it also is very cool you found put that he created a hotel just for killing. Do you know who the first person he was?
