How Do You Pronounce his Name Again?
Tycho Brahe was a danish astrologer, who made the most accurate measurements of the universe in his time. He was born in Scania, Denmark in 1546. Scania is now part of Sweden. He was raised in a wealthy family, and went to Copenhagen and Leipzig for college. Though his family wanted him to study law, Brahe chose instead to pursue astronomy.
His was most well known for his measurements of the universe. At the time the telescope had not been invented, this made making measurements very hard. At the time, astronomers held to the idea that space was made of separate individual spheres, with everything revolving around the Earth. Most astrologers were focused on certain points of each planet’s orbit, Tycho Brahe focused on each planet’s entire orbit allowing him to make very acute observations about them.
His knowings revealed the flaws in their universe. Unlike Nick Copernicus who proposed the heliocentric model where the planets orbit the sun.
Tycho Brahe still believed that the earth was the center of the universe, but with a twist of sorts. He implied that the sun and moon orbited the earth and the five other known planets orbited the sun.
In conclusion, Tycho Brahe was a very esteemed astrologist who made very accurate measurements of where the planets were in the universe. His measurements were quite acute considering the telescope would not be invented for another 20 years.
Andrew,
ReplyDeleteI loved your informative blog post! My question is, were Tycho Brahe parents happy with him once they realized his success in that area?
Thanks,
Bowen
Bowen, Thanks for taking the time to read my post, I don't really know if his parents were enthusiastic about being an astrologer, but I would assume that they were.
