Martha Graham and the Rise of Modern Dance

For centuries, classical ballet was the only dance style that people taught and choreographed. Martha Graham (1894-1991) was one of the pioneers of modern dance, who broke away from the specific, disciplined technique of ballet. She was one of the first dancers to discover and perform with different techniques such as contractions, floorwork, and energy with opposition. Her choreography and approaches at dance are what made modern dance what it is today.

Graham demonstrated passionate emotions in her choreography, something ballet was unable to do because of its constricted, particular movement. She explored with loose movement in the limbs and spine; spiraling energy and opposition; and expressing emotions through movement. "Ballet…did not say enough, especially when it came to intense drama, to passion," she said. Graham’s innovations are now known as the "Graham Technique," which is used frequently in modern and contemporary dance to convey strong feelings. She greatly impacted dance, and is known still as the "mother of modern dance".

Martha Graham's creativity has greatly affected me and my dancing. She started something that has been used, altered, and elaborated on, to create entirely new approaches at expressing things through movement. Ballet training is extremely important for all dancers, because it teaches proper technique that is used in all styles, but I’m glad that I can use different movement in contemporary. Contemporary dance lets us portray feelings in a way that we can’t through ballet alone. Martha Graham inspired and influenced many dancers and choreographers, and completely changed dance. Her work has made dance more enjoyable for me, and many other dancers all over the world.

  1. Dear Margot,
I really enjoyed reading your article because of the amount of description that you use to show the world of dancing. My question is, where was classic ballet invited?

  2. Dear Margot,
Thank you for your blog post! There are so many writings about ballet, but the history of modern dance seems to be largely ignored. How do you think your attitude towards dance or your dancing would be different if modern dance had never been conceived of? Would you still do dance, would you still have as much fun, would you be pursuing a different goal? It's not a pressing question, but I just wonder a little about if there are any other ways this has affected you.
    Thank you for your time.
    Sincerely,
    Eve

  9. Hi Margot,
Great piece, I loved how you tied your learning about Martha Graham to your own life and how she affects/affected you. It was cool how you talked about her style and the type f dance she partook in. If Martha Graham wouldn't have existed how would the modern world of dance be different, if it would at all?
    Sincerely,
    Adam

  12. Dear Margot
I love the clear descriptions of Martha Grahams dancing style and techniques, I could nearly visualize what one of her dances would've looked like in my mind. I was wondering if Martha's childhood affected the way that she thought about dance.

  22. Dear Margot,
Your post was downright awesome! I had no clue that modern dance actually originated form ballet, (I mean, I sort of recognized it, but I had no clue that it was directly influential.) I love how you included how she's influenced your career as a dancer. One question, at what age did Martha start dancing?

  23. Dear Margot,

I like how you chose to write about a person important to the history of dance instead of just dance itself. I also liked how you chose a person that not many people knew about. You included really great photos to go along with you post. Did you know about Martha Graham before this?
