Fashion then, fashion now

In this day in age you could walk outside in a sweatshirt, jeans and converse and no one would mind, but taking a step back in time around the 1700's the people would be horrified by that attire. Back then the common everyday outfit was much above our current styles. For a women she would wear over 10 garments (and that's only for an everyday outfit) If she we're to have company at her home she would wear her finest ballgown. Women never washed they're ballgowns, because they never would touch the skin. Almost every women would wear a corset so tight her shoulder blades would almost be touching...ouch. A 4 foot hoop would be placed under all garments to make her waist appear smaller.
Men had it a little easier. Only wearing a 3 piece suite, heels, a cane and a white, powdered wig.
This clothing style carried on for hundreds of years slowly becoming more casual.
1900's fashion. The long trained skirts a large brim hats became a look every women would sport. The clothing was a lot more safer for both men and women because everything became looser and less garments.
People that had less money than all of the higher class people clothes would usually be homemade and lack color.
Things have dramatically changed this passed 100 years. Some would say we seem to be slacking creative taste in our fashion in this day in age, but that's not always true. You go to any modern fashion show these days and you would be shocked at some of theses designs.

The photo you see where everyone is wearing nude clothing was designed my Kanye West, Kanye is a rapper that now has made a clothing 'seasons' as he calls them. He named this season Yeezy season 1. He sells every article of clothing for over 1,000 dollars, some even 10,000 dollars...and that's just for a sweatshirt. To me, when  when I think about that it makes me realize how much the way we dress ourselves has evolved.
If I were to go back when I was only 5 years old and dreaming about becoming a fashion designer (still is my dream!)I would not understand why a designer like Kanye would choose to not design elegant clothing, but maybe that's a good thing. Maybe it' good that we have come to make big changes in something so small over the thousands of years, it helps us create our own identity.

  1. Although fashion isn't something that excites me, your post was interesting, and I enjoyed reading it. I agree with you on all of your points... and I'm glad that our general fashion sense has evolved so much, otherwise I wouldn't be able to a) play sports, b) touch my toes, or c) pass through narrow doorways.
    Thank you,
    Charlotte

I am very happy to hear that my post took some interest in you!
It's very odd too think about the crazy things people would do just to look decent and I completely agree that it's good about the change so we are able to do everyday things!

      Thank you!

    1. Dear Imara,
I am happy to hear we both share an interest in fashion!
If I had to pick one type of fashion that is my favorite, I would have to pick street style. It's not too formal and not too laid back and it's such broad spectrum, so you can kind of just go crazy with it!

    2. Dear Ayla,
I really enjoyed reading your post! It was great how you brought the huge spectrum of differentiation in and how much the fashion really has changed. I loved what you said in the beginning how back in time, people would've been horrified by our daily attire today. Was the change in attire gradual or quite abrupt?
      Sincerely,
      Adam

  6. Hi Ayla,
I enjoyed reading your post. Fashion has changed so much over the centuries, and it's so cool to see you put that in a blog post. I always knew they dressed fancier, but I didn't know they had to wear over 10 garments! What do you think would happen if someone was less casual back then?
    Great Job,
    Julia

  8. Dear Ayla,
Your post did a good job giving a brief tour of fashion from the 1700's up to the modern day. It offered nice descriptions along with intelligent commentary. My question for you is, were people wearing fancier things the farther back in time you go?
    Keep up the good work,
    William

  12. Dear Ayla,
I really liked reading your post! It's so awesome to hear about how our clothes have changed over time. I didn't know where all are clothes came from, and the facts in this post answered just that. My one question would be what century would you pick to wear clothes from if you could for a day besides our current century? Great work!
    Sincerely,
    Rachel Y.

I never really thought how much our clothes have changed, but looking back, it amazing to witness how women had to dress in the 1600s compared to the 2000s. What do you think caused the transition to more casual clothing ?

  18. Dear Ayla,
I really liked how you ended your blog, it made me really appreciate fashion designers and all of the risks they must take just to move forward. You talk about how when you were five you would dream about becoming a fashion designer and making eligant cloths, do you still dream about elegant cloths, or do you dream about the cloths of the future?
    Great Job,
    Katie

  20. Ayla,
Great post! I loved how you explained and compared fashion from 1900s to fashion today. I also enjoyed your perspective on fashion, because I feel most people can be very judgemental about any style that isn't theirs. If I could ask you to add anything to this post, it would be adding more than just 1900s fashion, and more than just U.S. fashion. (As I'm sure you know) there are lots of different cultural styles out there! Good luck pursuing your fashion career dreams! Also, what fashion style do you prefer?

    Great post

  21. Ayla,

Wow, 1000 dollars for a sweatshirt in just a few seconds! Thats more than my entire amount of allowance I have gotten throughout my entire twelve years of being alive added together! I love how you mentioned how you strive to be a designer, and judging by your amazing sense of fashion, I would love to see you follow through with your passion!

    Just do it,
