What is Procrastinating Really Like?

Being a procrastinator myself, I have a very hard time completing assignments on time and that leads to less sleep. But let’s get on with the show. Ok… I am going to give you a once in a lifetime offer. I am inviting you to step into my life for a little while and see what it is like to be me.

Friday 3:15 pm

YES!!!!! School’s out. Everyone is really excited for the weekend. Can’t wait to sleep in, have fun with families and friends, and best of all… DO HOMEWORK!!! So, let’s begin our procrastination with an hour or so of just playing video games.

Friday 6:00 pm

Now we are at home and guess what! It is time to relax! We have practically 3 days of who cares what. Let’s spend the rest of this day relaxing because, why not.

Friday 7:00 pm

Okay, it is dinner time. Let’s eat a little before getting back to doing absolutely nothing. Mmmmm food was good. And the best part is that it required minimal effort on my part.

Friday 9:00 pm

Okay, you know what. I have plenty of time this weekend. Let’s just go to bed.

Saturday 11:30 am

“WAKE UP!!!” shouts my father, “IT IS 11:30!!!” I slowly climb out of my bed. Usually, somewhere throughout my weekend, I visit my social queue. I typically will have at least one friend over. So… let’s insert a sleepover right about here.

Saturday 2:00 pm

So, this was the time in which my friend was supposed to arrive. Luckily I know that friends can be 5 minutes to 2 hours late. Therefore I am prepared.

Saturday 4:00 pm

“Ding dong!” The doorbell rang. “Wow insertfriend’snamehere (I have one in mind but I would just like you to find that one friend in your life who does this. There is always one), you are two hours late. AGAIN!!!” I exclaim after my friend finally arrives. Now it is time to plan out the night. So right here there is usually quite a lot of lollygagging and chatting and maybe even a movie or tv show. Who knows.

Saturday 6:00 pm

Dear picky eaters,

I would just like to express that whilst I do know where your acquired taste buds came from I would like to tell you that it can be kind of annoying trying to find something you will eat. I mean no offense. But it’s true. I would also like to state that I am a part of this picky eater family along with all of you so it is fine. But you could at least try to eat some food.

Many thanks,

Anonymous

So anyway, back to my friend. The only thing she eats is sushi. Nothing but sushi. She says that’s not true. But whenever you ask her what she will eat, she will reject everything but sushi.

So that is basically how we feed her. Unless there is candy. She will eat that.

Sunday 2:00 am

We start watching tv. My dad and brother probably just went to sleep about an hour ago. There is probably also an arrangement of scavenged candy, soda, cookies, and on a good day ice cream.

Sunday 4:00 am

We have officially run out of things to talk about. Everyone is asleep. So we decide to go to sleep as well. By the way, I haven’t even thought about homework to this point.

Sunday 11:30 am

My daddy barges into the room saying, “Wake up! Wake up! Insertfriend’snamehere, your mom is going to be here in thirty minutes. Wake up!” After we all clamber slowly out of bed, he asks us if we want pancakes with chocolate chips.

Sunday 12:00 pm

“Insertfriend’snamehere, where is your mom?” I ask with a confused look on my face. She responds the same as always by saying she’s always 2 hours late. I thought you knew that. Okay fine. That is not really her response. She usually makes up an excuse. Such as what follows (by the way these are good excuses for any of you late folk to use):

  1. Traffic (this is a classic excuse)

  2. My mom needed to run errands (also works)

  3. We needed to charge the Tesla (one that this friend uses all the time)

But we all know that it is an excuse and that is all that matters.

Sunday 4:00 pm

My friend finally leaves the house

Sunday 8:00 pm

I have finally eaten dinner and I’m about to start my homework.

Sunday 9:00 pm

I start watching Netflix

Sunday 10:00 pm

I start my homework

Sunday 11:59 pm

I get to go to sleep. Oooh, it is before midnight! That’s a record.

Monday 10:00 pm

It is time to start my homework

Tuesday 2:00 am

Thank god I am done with my homework!

And this is pretty much how the rest of the week goes.

*Now I would like to remind you that procrastinating should not be attempted at home. Only attempt to procrastinate if you are a professional procrastinator.

*Don't procrastinate if you have a partner or group to work with because they could either end up doing all of the work, or they could end up getting a bad grade all because you procrastinate.

*If you procrastinate, make sure to not fall asleep. I have tried to do math homework (for example) and just all of a sudden I was asleep. That did not go over well the next day. Make sure your family knows that you are a procrastinator so that if this incident happens, they can wake you up early in the morning to finish.

  1. Hi ABellPepper,
Nice piece. You clearly are a true procrastinator. When did this procrastination start? I thought it was funny to read. I also love how it’s easier to read because you break it up with a schedule. Nice post!

    1. Hey FoxelephantVioleta,
To answer your question, I started procrastinating probably when I was in about second grade. I remember I used to have weekly homework. That was always a Sunday problem.
Thanks for reading my blog post,

  2. Hi ABellPepper,
I really enjoyed how you incorporated humor in the piece. The schedule made it fun, and invites people to actually follow it. I for one definitely want to try it since it seems fun. I also like how you included conversation in your blog post ,both with the reader and with the people involved in your post, since it created a vivid scenario that I could totally see happening. Do you ever think about not procrastinating, and if so why? Overall, your post was a lot of fun to read!

    1. Dear Snow Leopard,
Firstly, I would definitely not try to start procrastinating because once you start, it is hard to stop. It kind of becomes a habit. A very bad habit. Sometimes I try not to procrastinate. However, I always end up procrastinating. There is always something more interesting to do than the task at hand and procrastinating is fun. However, procrastinating is not smart if you want a reasonable amount of sleep.
      Sincerely,

  3. Hi ABellPepper,
I really enjoyed how much humor you weaved into your story as well as giving such vivid examples. What do you think are the benefits of procrastination? I thought your post was a great example of how to write with humor and fun, and to talk about something that seems to be so prominent in your life. Lovely post!

    1. Hi Teeny Tiny Fury,
In my opinion, procrastinating benefits you in opening up several days in which you would normally have things to do however that backfires in the end.

  5. Bravo ABellPepper,
I loved the way you approached this topic in your blog. I really thought it was cool how you gave us your schedule just so we could really understand what your life was like. I especially loved the tone it was written in. It was very fun to read, and I love the joke about the tesla. This is an amazing post. After reading you post, I was wondering If you could give a person one tip on how to help with procrastination, what would it be?

    1. Hello PinkPanther4567,
Thank you! I think that if I were to give you a tip about procrastinating, I would probably say to not procrastinate in the first place. It can become an addiction. Something that just naturally happens. Other than that you could try to set the deadline way before the project is actually due. That sometimes works. You could also reward yourself for finishing tasks that you need to complete early.
      Yours Truly,

    2. Hi ABellPepper,
That is smart! Personally I think think that sometimes procrastinaing is better, like a better product comes out if you are working till 12:00 the night before you thing is due. Is there any intances where this has happened to you?

this is great? i loved that you talked about a big issue that can effect many people in a big way but is not talked about very much. What have you done to help you with procrastinating?

    1. Dear Bananabunny,
To help myself stop procrastinating, I have tried many things including rewarding myself by doing the task at hand and having other people try to make me do the task. I’ve also tried to make checklists to plan out what I have to do.

When I am trying not to procrastinate, I have made checklists that plan out the time for me to complete the work and the different work that I have to do. I also have rewarded myself for not procrastinating.

  8. Dear ABellPepper,
I love how you put humor into your writing, I definitely laughed at the "*Now I would like to remind you that procrastinating should not be attempted at home. Only attempt to procrastinate if you are a professional procrastinator" part. I can also relate because I will admit, I have procrastinated on projects. Do you normally get your work done on time or not?

    1. Hey YoyleBlogs,
I usually do get my work done on time. However, as I mentioned in the blog post, I have also done group projects on my own really late. So I have had partners who have no idea what the project is and what I am saying. But as long as I know about the work, I am capable of getting it done.
      Thanks,

i can relate so much! i loved your blog post, it was a great way of writing about something that so many people feel and think. Is there anything you can suggest for no procrastinating (even though it is great)?

    1. Hi gracie,
Procrastinating is fun however, I feel that if you set reasonable goals and plan things out enough (including procrastination time), everything will get done. A strategy for getting work done could be to complete the harder tasks first so that you don't have to complete them later on and the work will just be easier from there. Also avoid distractions (and if there are some around, make sure you get bored of them).

  10. ABellPepper,
This post was so entertaining! I loved how it was written like a script so you could get a feel about what your life is really like. I know that a lot of people in our grade procrastinate, so how late have you stayed up doing hw (as a record)? And what type of procrastinator do you consider yourself as?

    1. Hey tinyelephant,
I have stayed up pretty late. I usually try to get sleep on school nights because if I don't, school sucks. However, as a record, I have probably gone to bed at like 4:30 am and woken up at 7:00. That’s two and a half hours of sleep. That is really bad. If we are going by the different procrastinating types on that graph, I am probably a “crisis-maker.” That is what most procrastinating causes and I don't think I fit as well into the other categories. Therefore, that is where I would categorize myself.
      Sincerely,
      ABellPepper

Nothing related to the post ,but I really like your username :)
Anyways, I can honestly relate to this so much. I listen to music while doing my homework and on some days I get a lot done and on others I do absolutely nothing.
Do you think that you will gradually stop procrastinating?
