Previously, we have sent many other things to Mars, including rovers, landers, and satellites. Above is the Opportunity Rover (above, left), whose mission was supposed to last 30 days, but when on for 15 years. It lost connection and shut down after a planet-wide dust storm cut off the light to its solar panels, so it couldn't get power, and died. It's last message to Earth was "My batteries are low and it's getting dark", as tweeted by science reporter, Jacob Margolis. Opportunity's companion rover, Spirit, died much earlier. Another rover is on mars with the two dead other ones, called Curiosity (above, right). Loss of solar power will not kill Curiosity though, because instead of solar panels, Curiosity is powered by an MMRTP (Multi-Missions Radioscope Thermoelectric Generator), which relies on the heat generated by the decay of a large chunk of plutonium dioxide, a very radioactive substance. So because of the MMRTP, the Curiosity rover could never die due to loss of sunlight, but it can lose radio connections to Earth.

Hi greywolf19,
ReplyDeletethis is a really interesting topic to chose. I had a lot of fun reading it because I myself have thought about living on other planets before. Your photo of mars was incredible and your others gave an idea of what you were talking about. if you were to go live on mars what are a few things you would bring with you?
Thanks!
Liv
hi greywolf19
ReplyDeletei really enjoyed reading your blog post, and i liked how you talked about something you are passionate about. are there other things that you enjoy doing?

Hey Greywolf19,
ReplyDeleteI liked reading your article and I have never really thought about going to Mars or anything with Mars. It was really cool to learn new things about Mars. If you had enough space to bring anything you wanted, what would you bring and what would you do with it?

hi graywolf19,
ReplyDeleteI loved how you were not just thinking of traveling to another planet, but what it would mean for society to travel to another planet. I think this is a really cool topic, that is very different from the rest. Do you think we will be traveling to planets like mars in you lifetime? Would you want to be an astronaut that goes to mars?

graywolf19,
ReplyDeleteI like how you didn't just center the break through of travelling to another planet around yourself but also how that would effect society, even the whole world.
What got you into space travel?

Dear GreyWolf19,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading about Mars and failed Nasa missions. I really liked how you were thinking about how to get to Mars and what it would mean for us. I also loved your pictures because they helped clarify between the different rovers. Why did you decide to write about interplanetary travel?
