I was first introduced to video games around the age of two. Me and my sister would play educational video games like Pajama Sam, Freddi Fish, and Putt-Putt. We would sit together, me, my sister, and my mom, and we would play for hours. Then, when I was five, our whole family started playing games together on our PS3.
We started by playing Little Big Planet together, a video game centered around imagination with an option for up to four players. Every night, we would go downstairs and play until I had to go to sleep. Sometimes, if I couldn't go to sleep, I'd go downstairs at around midnight to find my parents still trying over and over again to finish a level without dying. We would also play one player games like Ni No Kuni, Portal 2, and Ratchet and Clank, and just switch off who got to play. However, my sister was very possessive of the controller when it came to Ratchet and Clank. Then, when I was six or seven, I started playing games with just my sister. We replayed games like Little Big Planet, Ni No Kuni, and Portal 2, and also played new games, like Little Big Planet 2 and Puppeteer. Then, when I was about ten, we got a PS4, and we played some new games, both as a family, and just me and my sister. We played games like Tearaway, Unravel, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Little Big Planet 3. Then, when I was 11 or 12, we got a PS VR headset for Christmas. On it, we played games like Moss, Eagle Flight, and Thumper. We also got a Nintendo switch last year, and me and my sister play Mario Odyssey and Snipperclips. Throughout my life, video games have been a special bond between me and my family. We play games together as a way to connect with one another. It's something that we all enjoy.
"Video games foster the mindset that allows creativity to grow" - Nolan Bushnell
I also play games on my computer. I enjoy playing games that are story rich, with well thought out plots, backstory, and characters. I have played a lot of games and recommended a lot of them to my friends, such as Iconoclasts, Rakuen, Undertale, Don't Starve, and OneShot. All of these games are well thought out and interesting to play, with immersive plot and relatable characters. I enjoy RPG games where I can really connect with the main character. Unfortunately, most people see gaming for boys, and that if girls do game, they like cute, mindless games. And the stereotype goes both ways - boys supposedly only enjoy violent games. People seem to look at me sideways when I jump into a conversation about a game that I've played or seen. Sometimes, though, me and my friends can talk about games without judgement. I have recommended many of my favorite computer games to my friends, three of which are guys, and whenever one of them plays it, they usually enjoy the games that I've recommended. Yes, I'm a girl, and yes, I don't enjoy violent games, but video games shouldn't be looked at like a mindless way to pass time, or an evil, violence inspiring tool of destruction, it should be looked at as a way to connect with people. A way to tell a story, to share an idea. They should be able to be enjoyed by all people, of any age and all genders.Image credit:

I love your post and how you talked about something you truly love. I really enjoyed how you didn't describe the games, but rather where your love of gaming came from. I like how you expressed your views on video games and overcoming stereotypes. I also enjoyed how you tied in your relationships with other gamers like your friends.
ReplyDeleteWhat's your favorite part of gaming?
-Teeny Tiny Fury
Teeny Tiny Fury,
DeleteThank you for the compliments! I think that my favorite part of gaming is when I find a game that I enjoy, I can really immerse myself into the world and characters of that game, and I can enjoy the story that the people who created that game worked so hard on. Feeling that connection that I feel with the main character is truly amazing. As I said, video games are an amazing way to tell a story, because they're so interactive and immersive.

Dear Abigail,
ReplyDeleteI love how wrote about a topic that really has to do with your family. I love how you write about how gaming affects you and your family. How does being 1 out of 2 girls who play video games in the class affect you?
Blue shirt guy
Blue shirt guy,
DeleteTo answer your question, it makes me a little sad. Gaming is becoming so popular, and yet it's still viewed as a 'boys only' type of thing. The fact that an entire demographic of people aren't welcome to enjoy this art form is saddening. It's like if there was an art museum open to the public, but the majority of the people who went in were all of one gender or skin color or religion, because it was looked at as a museum for only those people. We are excluding about half of the entire population from enjoying video games. It's sad, but also motivates me to keep playing to prove that video games aren't only for boys.

Dear Abigail,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed how you talked about something that some girls have trouble talking about.
What is your favorite video game and, what got you into enjoying video games so much?
Bananabunny,
DeleteI would be hard pressed to pick a favorite video game. There are so many that I enjoy! I think what got me into gaming was at a young age playing lots of games with well thought out stories and characters, instead of something like candy crush. I just kept playing them from there, and they've always been a part of my life.
- Abigail
Dear Abigail,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post! I can't even imagine how difficult it could be to be in school and only have one other girl who shares interests with you. I'm also really excited that you talked about violent video games. i've been told in the past that i can't play a game because its "too violent" and the game was slime rancher. what would you tell someone in this situation?
-HiroGrace'sDragon
HiroGrace'sdragon,
DeleteThank you! I think that if I was in that situation, I might show whoever told you that the game was 'too violent' the actual game, because I know that game is not violent at all (except for when you're bit by a Tar.) I can imagine that that would be a tough situation, though. I hope that you get to play Slime Rancher!
-Abigail
Dear Abagail,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed how you wrote this post! I really think it was cool to have someone talking about how they break the norm! I definitely agree that they are for all gendered! I have a question for you: Do you think games are an art form? (I think so)
-YoyleBlogs
YoyleBlogs,
DeleteThank you for the compliments. I definitely see video games as a art form. They share a story or an experience, whether it's based on a true story or entirely fictional, they share stories that on some level, we can all relate to. If that's not art, then what is?
- Abigail
Dear Abigail-
ReplyDeleteThis post is really great- and I really like how you chose to address the topic that video games are not only for boys, but for girls too. This bias still goes on, and I agree with everything you felt about it. You're message came across really clear, and I also like how you included some recommendations for what video games to play! That was a really nice touch. How long have you been playing video games, and what sparked your great love and interest? Also, what would you recommend to a person who just started playing?
-RisingSun13
risingsun13,
DeleteThank you for everything you said! I have been playing video games for probably eleven years now, and I have loved almost all of the ones I've played. I think what sparked my love and interest was just being exposed to a lot of great games as a child. If you're starting to play video games, first off, yay! Video games should be more widely played and looked at in a much more positive light. Second, if you're playing computer games, then I would recommend getting Steam, which is a free gaming platform, but you do have to pay for the games. Then, you could either start out with some of the games I've recommended, (some are more expensive than others, but in my opinion, they're worth it,) or look for games that seem interesting to you. If you're doing console gaming, you do the same thing, but with disks. Whatever games you decide to play, I can guarantee that once you find one that looks good, you'll be deeply immersed in the story once you start. I hope that you have fun, and game on!
- Abigail
Dear Avigail,
ReplyDeleteI like how you are expressing something some other people might not be able to. I think it was a nicely written post! Who in your family is the most fun to play with and why?
Keep up the good work!
-PortugueseGrape
PortugueseGrape,
DeleteThank you! I enjoy playing games with everyone in my family. We usually do either games as a whole family, or I do games with my sister. I like gaming with my whole family because I enjoy getting to spend time with them and passing off the controller in a frantic scramble when a boss arrives, but I also enjoy games with just my sister. We get along really well, and will often have running commentary going through that game that we're playing. I enjoy both for different reasons.
- Abigail
Hi Abigail,
ReplyDeleteYour post was so good! I enjoyed all of it. I really love your beginning! What is your favorite game? How long have you loved video games? You wrote this post really well.
-elephantsandslothsarecool
elephantsandslothsarecool,
DeleteThank you for the compliment! As I answered to Bananabunny, there are too many video games that I love to pick just one! They've made me laugh, think, or even cry at times. I've loved video games ever since I started playing them.
- Abigail
Hi Abigail,
DeleteI enjoy reading about gaming. I love playing Mario Kart or Super Smash Bros with my brother. It's some of the only time I get with him. Do you have a limit on how much you play? Do you play with friends?
-SlinkyMuffin
Abigail,
ReplyDeleteThis. Is. So. Cool. I have never played video games that need controllers. It sounds like a lot of fun. Did your parents oppose you playing video games?
MM_Z
MM_Z,
DeleteThank you so much! Console gaming is very fun. My parents never opposed me playing video games. They were actually the people who introduced them to me. They've also been gaming longer than I have! They bought a PS2 console before I was even born.
- Abigail
hi abigail,
ReplyDeletei don't really play that many video games but your post really explains it all! i really enjoyed reading it, nice job! Whats your favorite part of gaming?
-gracie :)
Hi Abigail,
ReplyDeleteI can totally relate to what you are saying. I have been playing video games for a very long time, though not as long as you. I also get tons of crap for playing video games and reading comic books and liking super heroes like Squirrel Girl. I also get ridiculed for watching nerdy tv shows such as Gravity Falls and trying to analyze and answer questions and solve codes about the show.
Do you have any recommendations for new and interesting games?
Let us grieve existence together.

Dear Abigail,
ReplyDeleteI really liked this post because it's cool that you do what you enjoy and not let stereotypes hold that passion back. I have played video games ever since I can remember and has always been a part of my life. What is the hardest boss or game that you have ever beat?
