Benefits and Doubts of a Lifer

I can't dive into other people's minds, but I imagine what they might see. The thought of being a lifer at Catlin would likely bring enchanting images into peoples minds, through its years of joy and friendship, it isn't only that. Memories are messy and beautiful, 9 years of being at Catlin gives a lot of room for them. They are simple and complex, from the disturbing singing of preschoolers to fourth grade, watching my two best friends wrap themselves in caution tape for a photoshoot. It took years for me to get there, and years for me to arrive here. In 10 years I know I will look back on this age and wonder how I thought, thinking of my past self and how I was different. I know I will think and see a different image of myself than everyone else does because that is my mind, my experience, my point of view. That's the downfall of being a lifer, there is no fresh start, there was no switching to schools where nobody knew my history, who I have been and how I have changed. Reputations stick with us, as they do from the first 7 seconds, the average amount of time it takes to get a first impression of someone, according to several sources linked below. So although being a lifer is filled with joy and time for the strengthening of friendships, it is also full of cons. Regardless of the stress and lack of immediate connection, someone who would come into our class years after they shed their old traits, would have a no cage, called a past. The years of connection though, are also benefits, and I wonder if I would have the friends I have now if I had come to this school a moment later. Being a lifer can allow time to find move through friendships, as hard as it can be. Having a part in the community since day one can also allow for an advantage in the academic field since you have had years to learn how the school works, and you are on the same learning course as you always have been. Experience in other schools can be helpful academically as well though and can allow for a chance to expand a friend group when switching to another. That chance, having friends inside of school and outside of school, can be exciting and grant a wider range of people in your life. In the topic of other schools academic and social convenience when switching, I have found that academic advantage doesn't play in as much as social change. Change as well happens academically though, you could be hearing about a project previous students had completed, and when you reach their point that opportunity goes away. Take for example FAME, which went from movies to wheels. That sudden difference will change a path you predicted to be on, which has both its pros and cons. In the end, I think I would change my past if I had the chance, I would have rather had time at another school, before coming to Catlin. I would want this because it would grant me the benefit of having a new reputation, new friends as well as old from in and out of school, and a little more difference in my life, as well as view.

  1. liv,
I found this blog post intriguing and surprisingly relatable to hear from a fellow lifer. I think the opinions and thoughts you put into this really pay off in the readers eyes. I can picture so much about your Catlin experience physically and emotionally. I was wondering if it might make your post even more understandable if you talked about more specific experiences you have had at Catlin that give you these opinions in the first place.

    Sincerely,

    amare

I have a lot of great memories from my childhood but I am also not proud of who I used to be. I think ive grown a lot but I know most people remember those years and I know reputations stick, even after a while. I guess I just wish I hadn't done some things and acted some ways because it would have made those years less dramatic and more fun.

  2. hi liv,
i loved this post, i am not a lifer but did come fairly early to school in catlin (3rd grade), i enjoyed your post because for someone is not a lifer i thought that i could see a bit better in your shoes. if you were to go back and change something in your experience at catlin, even if you would'nt really do it, what would you choose to change.

I dont know what I would change. when I look back on my old self I'm not proud. I guess I would just change the decisions I made, so that I might discover a better person in myself.

  3. Hello Liv,
I didn’t even think about writing about this but as a fellow lifer I enjoyed reading this and knowing exactly what you were saying. I could picture what you were saying because I can relate. I have an older sister who would tell me things about Catlin but it’s really weird when they change. Where would you want to go instead of Catlin?

    2. foxelephantvioleta,
I dont know where I would want to be instead of Catlin. I haven't thought about it too much. I would prefer to go to a public school before coming to Catlin, as I mentioned in my post, but I dont know which one.

    3. Hi Liv,
I think it's werid to think about how long I have been at just this one school. I agree that I might have wanted to go to a different school as a kid but I didn't really have a choice then. What is your favorite part of Catlin?

  4. Der liv,
It was really nice seeing the point of view of a lifer because not much lifers talk about it. If you had the choice of going to a public or private school, which would you choose?

if I had to pick between remaining at Catlin or going to another school I dont know what I would pick. i really want to experience other schools, how they are different, if they are more fun (which ive heard they are) but I would likely stay at Catlin due to all the friendships I have built.

  5. Dear liv,
I love your writing! The point of view from a lifer compared to the point of view of a new student is very different! In what ways does being a lifer have an impact on your life outside of school?
    Overall, Congrats on your writing!

I dont really know the answer to your question. I have never really thought about it. I guess because I didnt go to another school I dont have friends outside of Catlin, which I mentioned in the post. I feel like without those friends, my social life can be hampered at times, but I think I have some really great friends here.

I think I might. well, probably not if it meant losing my friends at Catlin, but I have always wondered how being in a private school is a different experience from being in a public, and I would love to be able to answer that question through experience.

  7. Dear Liv,
I really enjoyed reading this post because it offered a really interesting perspective. I never thought about being a lifer in such a way. I really enjoyed this post anyway because I thought it was very well written and detailed. If you didn't go to Catlin, which school would you want to go to?

  8. Dear liv,
I liked reading your blog because I thought it was cool to hear what someone thought about being a lifer and I thought your writing is really good! Your blog was really in thought and I can imagine what it's been like at catlin your whole life although mine is basically the exact opposite, cause I just came into Catlin. Do you have a specific favorite memory with your friends?
    Good job,
