The Media

Media influencing us and the world
By Greta Anderson

Over the last 500 years, the influence of mass media has grown with the advance of technology. Kids everywhere using it in school to look up words or finishing projects to playing games on the computer. Or grown ups looking at their phone for directions to trying to find the sale on a piece of clothing.

First there were books, then newspapers, magazines, photography, sound recordings, films, radio, television, the so-called New Media of the Internet, and now the current media. I just wonder what will come next! But this might be the end. People just made one of the biggest findings over the last years of using technology but think of before that. Not much happened over maybe 100 years. I think now we are slowing down the technology and going into another 100 years of not finding as much. That is just my hypothesis

Today, just about everyone depends on information and communication to keep their lives moving through daily activities like work, education, health care, leisure activities, and the other stuff with which we are involved. This I think is what really has influenced us. We use social media to find our friends see what they're up to kind of what I call stalking. The media basically screams STALK PEOPLE or BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU SEE. I have realized this isn’t always the case. I know that I have seen a lot of things I wish I hadn't seen on the internet that I know isn’t true but I believed it anyway but there should be something that people can see that shows them not everything is true on the internet.

It's not unusual to wake up, check the cell phone or even sleeping with it. I don’t sleep with it but I do like checking what I have missed in the morning before I get ready which I don’t think is a bad thing. Lots of people also check out the TV or newspaper for news, commute to work, read emails, take meetings and makes phone calls.

But so what? We need to be aware that the values we hold, the decisions we make are based on our assumptions, our experiences, our education and what we know for a fact. As I mentioned earlier we can’t trust everything. We rely on the media for the news and facts about what what we should be aware of. We trust the media as an authority for news, information, education and entertainment. Considering that powerful influence, then we should know how it really works.

All of the traditional media still have great influence over our lives. Books once were supremely influential because they came first before newspapers, magazines, radio or television. Newspapers and magazines became great influencers after they were developed. Sound recordings and film were and still are influential.

Radio and then television were very influential. As the 20th century closed, TV exposed us to untold numbers of images of advertising and marketing, suffering and relief, sexuality and violence, celebrity, and much more. This made us want more of that so the media made more of it and now thats all we can think of now the media has turned us into only knowing one thing and trusting the media only. In our minds we have to be like everyone else there is hardly a person anymore who wants to be totally different. I’m thinking the same thing “I don’t’ do that!” well maybe you don’t but a little part of us always wants to be in on the crowd and new stuff.

In conclusion media isn’t always bad or good but I can safely say it’s VERY influential!

  1. Hey greta
good blog. I had a quick question:
When my grandma was over at my house visiting in the spring, she asked me to help her with how to work her newly purchased iPad. I knew how to do everything she wanted me to do-with ease. However, it flummoxed her not only how I was able to do it but also how I was able to do it with very little training.
I never looked at a manual to see how to switch apps of wet up a wifi connection. To me and every other thirteen year old, this is second nature. My question is how am I able to work the media and the technology with no training while those in the generation before us struggle?
    thanks, good blog,

  2. Greta,
This is very well written. You did a good job expressing your point and gave some very good examples which tied in perfectly. You gave some really good detail about how the media influences us now but I think that maybe you could've given a little bit more about it back then. Examples of how media started and or settled conflict?
Great job overall! I really enjoyed reading this. :)

    1. Hi Anika,
Thanks for the comment. And advice I think we still have lots of conflicts in the media but I know that everyone should be treated equally on the internet.

  3. Heyyyyyy,
What do you think media is becoming? What do you think it is going to be? I couldn't believe it when my mom got an iPhone. She needed so much help. It was hilarious!

    1. Hi Mahala,
I think that we should cut down how we use our media because if we use the media as we do now then in the future all we will use is media. I like the media but I know I over use it and I should not use it as much. And yes! when my mom got an Iphone she was the same way!

  4. Hey Greta,
Nice post. It is really well written but how did the media influence people back then? When do you think the earliest traces of the media was? I understand it is very influential but what was a major difference between a newspaper and the internet? I wonder what led people to expand the media so much. If the media was to take another step in improvement, what would happen and how?

  5. Hiya Greta,
Do you feel that media affects our self esteem at all? What age group do you think media affects the most? What do YOU think, would we be better with or off media? Anyways, great post. You made it very clear that media has a very large influence on us. It definitely controls and influences audiences.

    1. Hey Lexi,
I definitely think that the media has effected everyone in how we react in the world today it could lower or higher our confidence in just a second. I personally think that we should start using the media less because think of all the cyber bullying every year because of the media we just need to be careful on how we use it. :)

  6. Hi Greta,
But do you think that media has changed our society for the better, or worse? I mean I am great with electronics, and like Hank said,it's basically second nature. But my parents and grandparents don't know much about electronics.IS that because their generation doesn't know much about electronics,or is it something else?Would we be better without electronics? Also give some detail on who invented electronics, and his/her early life. But great job overall, you were very descriptive and intriguing. This was a joy to read

    1. Hi Malik,
It could be taken both ways i think it's better because of it makes things more efficient but worse because people can get addicted to it.

Wow! You did a great job on this post. Why do you think that most people feel a need to be on social media and to be connected 24/7? Nice job! :)

Thanks for the response I wish there was a way for people to know better that you can't be on the media 24/7 because people get addicted and can't stop.
