Procrastination is a BIG Problem

Hi, I’m a student at Catlin Gabel, and I have a BIG problem. That problem is procrastination.
Procrastination has been a problem with students for a long, long time. This dilemma goes
back to 700 B.C. I’m serious! It all started with a Greek poet of the name of Hesoid. He had
put off all his writing to do the next day, and that’s what he wrote about. The poem was:

“Do not put your work off till to-morrow and the day after; for a sluggish worker does not fill his barn,
nor one who puts off his work: industry makes work go well, but a man who puts off work is always
at hand-grips with ruin.”

Our friend Hesoid was not the only one who struggles with procrastination,
the Blue Banner website did a study about how many college students procrastinate, about
90% - 95% of ALL college students procrastinate when doing school work.  When you step back
and take a moment to think about it, you realize that it is a very big problem.
Procrastination can also be the cause of other things beside bad grades, it can lead to
anxiety as well. For example, this year in math class, I have procrastinated quite a bit, and
it has lead to my anxiety and loss of sleep for me. I also know of many other students who
suffer from the same problem as me. The reason I like cultures class so much is because
I got to be better at not procrastinating. When I came to Catlin Gabel in 6th grade, I was
introduced to a new academic subject called Humanities. I knew it was basically history but
the new name threw me off. I thought it was a crazy new thing. The first few projects were
small, and pretty easy, but about four months in we were introduced to the main project, and
it was called R.I.C.E., standing for Rome, India, China, and Egypt. We had to research about
the history of the civilization that we chose, and eventually had to present a project in front of
parents. The teacher gave us a list of things that we had to do, and a due date and that was
pretty much it. We had to plan out when we were going to do it and how. Ours teacher gave
us almost every class just as a free period to work. I didn’t take the work periods seriously,
and I procrastinated SO MUCH. It came up to the last week of the project and I had to cram a
month of work into ONE WEEK. I was very stressed and I only worked in Humanities the whole
week, but I pulled it off. That week was one of the most stressful weeks of my life, and I
learned to STOP procrastinating.

Now, in 7th grade, we had two projects just like R.I.C.E., and I got through them just fine.
I am a lot more organized and less stressed, and I have 6th grade Humanities to thank for
that.

  1. Hello gatojuan,
I like how you had statistics and numbers in your post. I also procrastinate my work. Do you know the psychological cause of procrastination?
    A very well written post!

    2. Hi MM_Z,
Thanks for the comment! I'm pretty sure that a popular cause of procrastination is by fear of failure, but that's pretty much all I know about that.

  2. Hi gatojuan,
I liked all the facts you included as well as the VERY INTERESTING photos. I for one have always been tempted to procrastinate but have pushed myself not to, yet it continues to be and urge for me. what changed after those days of humanities? was that stress the only push it took for you to stop procrastinating? do you think procrastinating can be "contagious" to an extent? sorry for the weird questions. I like your post a lot.
    Thanks,
    Liv

    2. Hi Liv,
Thanks for the comment and the questions! Something that changed for me after the Humanities days, was whenever I am tempted to procrastinate, I think back to those moments when I was insane because of the workload I had to do, and think about how terrible it was, and that's my motivation. The stress was most of the push it took me to stop procrastinating, but I also had help from teachers and parents. I think it can be contagious to some extent, but not really contagious.

  3. Hey gatojuan,

I can relate in some ways to what you are talking about because 7th grade is stressful enough that even if I have all of my work done I still stress about nothing, I guess. To be fair it doesn't help that at this current point in time grades and school work seem to be most of what people see in other people that they might not know as well. Why did this seem like an important topic to share with the class? Great work!!!

    Thanks, Bubble Tea

    2. Hi Bubble Tea,
Thanks for the comment! I can totally relate to stressing about nothing, sometimes it even keeps me up at night! I felt like this was important to share to the class because I know that most of my friends get super stressed about school, and I think people can relate to this post which is what I wanted.

  4. Hey gatojuan,
I completely understand what you mean. if I am behind on something I can not sleep the night before. Do you think that that experience was good for you because it taught you not to procrastinate?

    2. Hi Bilbo the Cat,
Thanks for your comment! I am glad that you understand where this post is coming from. I think that the experience that I had in 6th grade was amazing because it taught me to try not to procrastinate anymore, and without it I would still have that problem.

  5. hi gatojuan,
your blog post is so relatable! I think I procrastinate a lot, and it really does contribute to anxiety and loss of sleep. I think this is right for a lot of students, is there anything you would suggest?

    1. Hi Mr Lucy,
Thanks for the comment! I’m glad that you found this comment relatable, that's why I wanted to write it! Something that I recommend to help anxiety is just to take a step back and think about the REAL problem. Think about if there is anything you can realistically do right now to fix it, and it not, just tell yourself, there’s nothing I can do. Something that also helps is to do something relaxing to you.

I thought this was a really cool topic. I think this is cool because it's something almost everyone can relate to. I was wondering what you think the best ways to deal with stress are?

    1. Hi Jesus,
Thanks for the comment! I really like that people can relate to this post. There are a lot of things that I do when I get anxiety because of a problem. First, I try to take a step back and look at the big picture, and I ask “Will this really matter?” or “Can I do anything about this RIGHT NOW?” If not, I try to recognize that. I also like to do activities that relieve stress for me, like go for a run, or just try to sleep.

I can relate because I have a big problem with procrastination. I like how you gave a historic example of procrastination. I was wondering what you think is the one worst thing procrastination dose to you?

    1. Hi NWfury,
Thanks for the comment! I’m very happy that you can relate to this post, and I think that the worst thing that procrastination does is lead you to anxiety, which is something very serious. I have experienced a great deal of anxiety over the years of me being in Middle School, and it can kind of rip your life apart.

    1. Hi Bozzy,
Thanks for your comment! I think the main cause for procrastination according to statistics is that people are in fear of failure, but for me it was pretty much just pure laziness.

I have said this on most of the post and I will say it again, this is really relatable. It was great to hear that you fixed your procrastination problem. That is still something i need to work on. If you went back to do R.I.C.E again, what would you try differently?

  16. Hi GatoJuan,
I know what its like to procrastinate a lot, it is one of my largest problems when working on homework and projects for school. I usually start out just feeling like I have a ton of time, but then once I've wasted it all I can get very stressed and it's even harder to work. What would be your advice on getting less stressed?

    1. Hey crunchy lettuce,
I'm glad that you can relate, and I' sorry that you also struggle with procrastination. Some advice I have to get less stressed is to stop what you are doing, and focus on the problem at hand. Most of the time for me it's homework, and I'll recognize where the stress is coming from and do whatever I can to fix it, and if I don't have enough time I usually just tell myself that people will understand, and I can catch up tomorrow or during school.

  17. Hi Gatojuan,
I really liked the part about the greek poet because it is funny to think that procrastination has been around that long. I also liked your picture of a nike logo with "Just do it...later“ It was really funny. If you could go back and do RICE differently but not learn about the dangers of procrastination would you? Why or why not?

I'm glad that you found my blog entertaining! I don't think I would change RICE, because that one moment helped me with so much schoolwork for the rest of 6th grade and even in 7th grade now, it was a great experience looking back on it, but a terrible one when I was actually had to do the work.

  19. Dear GatoJuan,

I liked that you thought about this from the perspective of a student. If a teacher looks at this issue, they normally think of it as a simple problem that can be fixed easily. In reality, it's more complicated. Do you procrastinate a lot?

  20. Dear GatoJuan,

love the formatting in your post. Though you say you've improved, do you still struggle with procrastination? Also, did you ever experience a total breakdown because assignments start to add up?

  21. gatojuan,
I like your post a lot, and I specifically like how you talked about how procrastination was a problem for you, an example of how it affected you in Humanities class in sixth grade, and then how that experience led you to stop procrastinating. After your experience procrastinating during RICE you said that you stopped procrastinating, but I know from experience that procrastination is an easy thing to go back to doing, so I was wondering if you have been completely procrastination free since RICE, and what helps you do that.
    Sincerely,
