March Madness and the Culture Around It

March Madness

It’s march 7th. For most people, this date doesn’t mean anything, but for me, it means that the best time of the year is less then a week away. The selection show for the 2018 NCAA bracket comes out on Sunday. The 68 team field will be revealed and immediately after, thousands of brackets will be made to try to predict the games and the upsets. Most people will fail, but it’s still fun for everyone.

This tournament is special because there is room for cinderella stories. For instance in the NBA playoffs, there’s no room for that because of the 7 game series. I’m sure that Middle Tennessee State, a college of about 22 thousand students, couldn’t beat Michigan State in a 7 game series, but it only takes one game and they did that in 2016, knocked off the #2 seeded Spartans, 90-81. This is what makes March Madness great. I had never even heard of Middle Tennessee State, but for that 2 hour period, I was a huge Blue Raiders fan.

The upsets aren’t the only good thing about this tournament. It’s also just the culture. Last year, tons of the people in my class got computers and at any spare time in the day, we would have our eyes trained to the games. And everyone was super engaged and hyped. I pride myself on following college basketball all year, but honestly, it doesn’t matter that much. Anyone can enjoy march madness. Last year, Harrison won our ESPN Tounerment Challenge. I 100% know more about college basketball then him, but it didn’t end up matter which I actually like, even though it hurts a hardcore fan.
Another great thing about march madness is all the teams that haven’t been there before and are just getting their first experience for them and their fans. You have your Duke, your, Kansas, your Kentucky, your North Carolina and sure, those teams are cool to watch with multiple NBA prospects, but I think the more entertaining games are the first timers. 2 years ago, I remember watching a first round matchup between Kentucky, a team that has been to the tournament 57 times and won 8 championships, and Stony Brook. It was Stony Brook’s first time in March Madness. With about 30 seconds left in the game and Kentucky up by 25, the Stony Brook fans begin to chant “Let’s go Seawolves”. They knew they weren’t going to win, but they didn't care. They were just happy to be there.
Part of the reason I like March Madness is that they play basketball. I
think basketball is the best sport to watch on TV. If March Madness was
34 games of baseball, I wouldn’t like it as much. Now that’s not a knock on baseball, I love that sport, but basketball is more entertaining on TV. Also, I love playing basketball. I remember when I was 3, I would play basketball at 24 Hour Fitness and it was super fun. My team was called the Layups, even though we couldn’t even make them. Basketball is just fun to play and watch, there’s not much else to say.
Even though March Madness is amazing every year, this year it is surrounded with controversy. In the fall, a report came out about many colleges paying high school athletes so they would come to their school, which is illegal in the NCAA. This lead to repercussions for major schools, such as Louisville, who lost their Hall of Fame head coach Rick Pitino and was stripped from their 2013 National Championship. Also, the projected #1 overall pick in this years NBA draft, Deandre Ayton from Arizona was reportedly paid $100,000 to play for Arizona. Now this scandal won’t have a huge effect on this year's tournament, but it could in the future. Even with these dark clouds above this year and the years to come, I’m sure it will still be just as awesome.

  1. Dear Wild Stallion42,
I am a huge fan of march madness, and I love the part about how you have loved basketball since you were a kid. How is march madness different from a normal bracket like the NBA bracket?
    Sincerely,

    1. Dear Mangamaster,

Thanks for reading my blog post. The ways the brackets are set up is the same, so that the best team plays the worst, the second best plays the second worst and so on. The difference between the 2 brackets is that in the NBA bracket, it is a best of seven series, so a team has to win 4 games to advance. In college, it's only one game, which is way there is way more upsets.

      Sincerely,

I liked how in the second paragraph, you talked about cinderella stories, I thought that was really interesting. I also liked the way you talked about march madness as a part of our community. I was wondering what your favorite part of march madness is.

    1. Dear Xander Vang,

Thanks for reading my blog post. I appreciate the support. Honestly, I love everything about March Madness. Probably my favorite parts though are the selection show, making my brackets and watching all the upsets in the first weekend. I know that's pretty much the whole thing, but that's as specific as I can get.

      Sincerely,

    2. Dear JestfulCommander,

Thanks for reading my blog post. Normally my favorite team is Oregon State, but they didn't make it this year, so I'm rooting for North Carolina. They are a 2 seed so they have a good chance of winning. The reason I like them is because I used to live in North Carolina.

  6. Dear WildStallion42,
I liked how you talked about specific games, and events regarding paying high school students to play on their team. I know that I have been to basketball games that don't end with a particularly pleasing score, but in the end I still have fun and enjoy the experience. One question I have for you is; Is there any particular team you have always enjoyed watching and/or rooting for?

    1. Dear Purplesealsonpluto,

Thanks for reading my blog post. North Carolina makes the tournament every year, so I always root for them. When Oregon State makes it, I root for them, but they don't always make it. I always like watching the small schools that make it and then have really good players, because I have never heard of them. For instance, Georgia State 2 years ago had a really good player named R.J Hunter that I had never heard of, but he was really good so I liked watching him.

I like your blog a lot because it shows how passionate you are about basketball and March Madness. I like Madness as well, it's really funny to see people get all fired up about it and then when you are like hey why are you so fired up about, they get offended. Do you get real fired up?

    1. Dear LoveAndGelato,

Thanks for reading my blog. I do get very fired up. I really really want my brackets to do well, so when they don't, I get a "little" frustrated. I'm trying to be more calm this year though.

  9. Dear WildStallion42,
I like your blog post and how march madness is just games there is a culture. I haven't really gotten in to march madness I only got into it this year. I think it is really fun now. Do you think that someone could win with a bracket if they guessed everything? Is the brackets you make more of a skill or luck or does it depend on the person?

    1. Dear Isabella Johnson,

Thanks for reading my blog post. I'm glad that you are doing it this year. Honestly, I think most of it is luck. I think the experts might have a slight edge, like maybe they would get a few more games right, but it's definitely not a huge difference. People like to think that skill is involved, but I've done it for a long time, so I've learned that it really is all luck.

      Sincerely,
      WildStallion42

I thought this was an intriguing blog, because even though I don't really know a lot about basketball, I was still able to understand it. I think it's cool how so many people come together for March Madness. I was wondering, who you are rooting for to win?

Thanks for reading my blog post. I was rooting for North Carolina, but they got eliminated today. Now, I'm rooting for Purdue, who is a 2 seed, because they are in my championship game in my bracket.

This post was very interesting, even though I was second last year because Gonzaga choked in the title game. Did you have to remind me of that? And which Cinderella teams do you have this year?

  15. Hello WildStallion42,
This is my first time following March Madness and filling out a bracket, and I completely agree. I usually don't follow basketball (and please don't be offended by this), but I love watching the screen closely and praying for the team I have in the next stage of the bracket to win. I am curious as to how you would have a differing opinion on this if you didn't really like basketball. Any thoughts?

    Sincerely,

I really liked the amount of detail you put into this. I also like the comparison between NBA and NCAA. How do you think these are different? Why is the tournament only in March and none other month?
