Astrology: Magic or Myth?

When I ask you when you were born, you can tell me the date and the year, and you might be able to tell me the time. But can you tell me how the planets and stars were aligned when you first popped into the world? Probably not!
A woodcut of the original zodiac signs

Astrology is the study of how the planets affect people and events. The way planets were arranged when you were born can give you insight into your personality and your inner self, much like the moon affects the tides. You've probably heard of zodiac signs like Aries and Pisces, which are determined by the month you were born in. Each sign has its own personality and character type associated with it. For example, Aries people are usually boisterous and fiery while Pisces people are usually spacey and creative. Though astrology hasn't been scientifically proven, many people believe in it and use their astrological charts to gain more insight into themselves.

Looking into the astrological aspects of the night sky
Though people didn't have daily horoscopes in the newspaper a few thousand years ago, people still looked up to the skies to predict future events and to answer their questions. For example, Tycho Brahe said "suspiciendo despicio", which means "by looking up I see downward". In fact, people have been using the stars for thousands of years, and not just for directions. The Babylonians are often credited for birthing astrology, and they valued astrology just as much as they valued scientifically backed astronomy. During the time period between the classical period and the scientific revolution, astrology was used to further mathematical, scientific, and psychological knowledge. When the scientific revolution swung around, however, people began seeing astrology and astronomy as different - astronomy was seen as more scientific, while astrology was seen as more absurd and superstitious. Though great figures in astronomy like Kepler and Galileo saw them as separate studies, they still practiced both equally.

So is astrology real, or is it just one big placebo? As stated above, astrology isn't scientifically supported, but there's an overwhelming amount of anecdotal evidence that points towards the fact that astrology isn't just myth. To find some evidence, you can take a look at your own zodiac sign and see if there are any similarities! Just use this handy chart:

My natal chart
My grandma is very interested in astrology - if asked, she can name all 12 zodiac signs, their traits, and the
planet they're associated with in the blink of an eye. The last time I visited her, she helped me make a natal chart, which is a more in-depth zodiac tool that includes all of the planets and how you're related to them based on your birth month. It seemed very complicated at first, but we dissected it and I found nearly all of the connections to be startlingly true! I've been using my zodiac to make decisions and know myself better for a long time.

So, what do you think? Is astrology actually a magical force, or is it all just one giant coincidence?

  1. Hi Hannah,

I too am extremely interested in astrology and in everyday life see how people's sun sign influences them in their choices and reputation. I love the quote you added by Tycho Brahe. Am I the only one that hates when people ask if you "believe" in astrology? Great writing!

    1. Hey, MK!

Thanks for reading my post - Tycho Brahe's quote caught my eye because I had no idea he was interested in astrology, and I'm glad I found it! You're definitely not the only one that rolls their eyes at people who think astrology is its own religion. To those people, I say: do your research.

Thanks for reading my post and contributing!

  2. Fri,

First of all, your use of advanced vocabulary in this blog post is impeccable! Everything flows so well! You are definitely going places! I find it sweet you and your grandma have similar interests, and that you indulge yourselves in the ever so mysterious concept of astrology through fun activities and beautiful work such as the natal chart shown above. To answer your question, I think astrology is magical, full of unknown concepts for us to explore and discover! Do you astrology actually a magical force, or one big coincidence?

Thank you for the lovely comment about my grandma and I! I'll show it to her the next time I see her. I, personally, agree with you on this topic - astrology is magical. When I tell people, it makes them do a double take, but there are too many coincidences for it to be farce. Have you had any experiences with astrology that make you vouch for magic?

      Thanks!

  3. Hi!

This is great! Definitely not click bait! I loved reading this, giving me a different perception of astronomy. Worth reading for sure! I actually have an astronomy chart of when I was born somewhere in my cluttered desk, maybe I could show it to you some time! When did you start looking more into astronomy? Do you and your grandma talk about astronomy a lot? Nice job, I really do love this!

Thanks for checking my post out! About the astrology chart, that's so cool - you should definitely show it to me sometime! To answer your question, I started digging deeper into my astrological thumbprint a few years ago. I think it only has substantial meaning once the person has learned a little more about themselves, which means that now's the perfect time to learn about it! Also, my grandma and I love chatting about astrology. She lives in Santa Fe, which means at night we can climb up to her roof and gape at the starry night sky (it's so clear, you can even see the milky way)!

      Thanks for the questions!

  4. Hey Fri,

This is an amazing post and I love the different charts and pictures that show you who are. This is so relatable to me because I love everything about space. To answer your question, I think it is a bit of both. A magical miracle and a giant coincidence. Once again I think that this amazingly detailed post and that makes it all the better.

  5. Dear Fri,
Beautifully written! I really enjoyed the bit about how we as humans looked/look up to the sky to predict future events! Super neat! I was wondering, how long has your grandma been studying about astrology? How did she start?

  6. Hi Fri,
I thought your writing was not only written with rich vocabulary, but was written carefully and precisely, expressing the point you were making extremely well. I've always wondered about the truth behind Astrology, and you did an excellent job explaining it to me. I was wondering if you think that the Zodiac signs that you've found true to yourself, are really true to everyone, and how you can know yourself better by understanding those.

    1. Hey, SK!

Thanks for reading my post. I think zodiac signs to hold truth for everyone, but it depends on how deep into their zodiac they dig. For example, someone may look at the stereotypes of their zodiac sign and shrug them off, but miss a primal point that lays deeper - for example, someone may not find truth in their horoscope in the newspaper, but if they take the time to write out (or print out) their natal chart, they may draw some interesting conclusions. You can know yourself better by... well... looking yourself up! Even just reading about your sign in an astrology book can help you learn more about yourself, and you can connect with people who share your zodiac sign.

      Thanks again!

  7. Hey Fri,
I found your article very interesting. I liked how you showed examples from your personal life, like your grandma and your astronomical chart, and showed how that related to what you were writing about. I found this article relatable and I believe that maybe there's a bit of science in the zodiac signs. Did you enjoy making the chart, was it extremely surprising? Also, have you always known that your grandma knows so much about astronomy? If not, when did you find out? Great job!

    1. Izzy,

I loved making the chart! I was originally going to just enter in the information online and print it out, but I thought it would be more fun to do it with my grandma, and I was right! She also obviously has a lot of knowledge in the field of astrology, so she helped me draw connections and write out all the traits for each sign in the natal chart (all the words between the spokes of the wheel). I think I've pretty much known that my grandma was interested in astrologysince I was able to think straight. Her and my grandpa are both metaphysical geeks, so it was a logical conclusion! ;)

      Thanks for reading!

    1. Hey, ILoveBasketball!

Thanks for checking out the chart. It's just a simple entry to astrology - if you liked reading it and thought it was interesting, you might want to look more into it (look it up, I'm sure you'll find something you'll be interested in)! In fact, not many people know this about me, but I have a mixed relationship with my zodiac traits. It turns out I'm a Pisces, but I also have a TON of Aries in me. If people were to guess my zodiac sign, they'd most definitely guess Aries because I present myself as being ambitious, loud, and energetic. This is because I have a conjunct in the Aries house - it sounds complicated, but if you look at the chart above you can see that there are two symbols on the Aries slice of the pie. These symbols represent the moon and Venus, which are both outward pieces of my personality. However, if you look at the slice ABOVE the Aries slice (the Pisces slice), you can see that there's a symbol drawn into it that means the sun - basically, the essence and fire of my being. Basically, outwardly I'm super Aries and inwardly I'm a Pisces, so horoscopes and things can be pretty misleading (the Pisces horoscopes don't always seem to match because they're buried beneath so much Aries), but when it comes to people I know, they totally match!

Thanks for reading! Sorry for the tiny rant. Hope you learned something!

  9. Dear Fri,
I found your blog about astrology extremely interesting. I thought it was so interesting that you wrote about your grandmother who is fascinated by astrology. I also had no idea that you used your zodiac sign to make decisions for yourself. What type decisions do you make using your zodiac sign? How do you use your zodiac sign to help you with decisions? When did you become interested in astrology? It was a fantastic blog.

Thanks for checking out my blog post! I don't necessarily make decisions based on my zodiac sign, I just use my zodiac sign to gain more insight into my personality and help me to know myself better. It's always interesting to read things about my astrological sign because I can relate to the things that are said! I can't remember when I first became interested in astrology - I'm pretty sure I've been interested in astrology for a very long time! I can remember reading a giant book about astrology a few years ago, and I can remember reading the horoscopes in the newspaper even before that.

      Thanks for reading!

  10. Hey Fri,

This blog post was amazing! The wording was perfect, and it flowed well. I personally do not believe in astrology, and that the way the stars align, makes a difference in your personality. Still fun to think about though. Do you believe in astrology?

Thanks for reading my post and thinking about the question I posed at the end. I do, in fact, believe in astrology. Though it's not scientifically proven, there's so much anecdotal evidence that it's almost impossible not to have faith in it. Plus, even if it's not true, it's super fun!

  11. Dear Fri,
First off, I love how you went so in depth and made a chart yourself! I too, am personally interested in astrology and the stories that lay in it. I at one point googled to find out what my personality is based on the stars, but I was confused by googles millions of search results, none of them said the same things. Do you think that most or all of the statements are true or are there "official" meanings?

    1. Hey, JT!

This is an interesting question, because I've faced similar predicaments during my lack of sleep induced internet binges. It's sometimes difficult to find good information in the world of astrology online because astrology is very personal, so it's mostly just composed of many people yelling their opinions into the void. Of course, there are professionals that have devoted their lives to astrology, but even the professionals online have differing facts and information. Personally, I think all of the statements online are true in their own ways. Usually, the information isn't COMPLETELY disagreeing with what other websites say, but they can differ slightly. However, some bits of information may resonate more with you than others, and those are the ones you should pay closer attention to. Of course, it's all up to you!

      Good luck!

    1. Hi, Peanutbutter!

I do believe that everything on the chart turns out to be true in one way or another, but it doesn't really have to do with the future as much as it has to do with the inner workings of one's self. That being said, YES, I can predict the future (as you saw me so boldly execute in Cultures today)! >:~) I'll predict your future for a price... hit me up at break! (Just kidding... or am I?)

    1. Hi, Davitts!

I'm glad to hear that you've always wondered about astrology. It's certainly intriguing! My opinion on astrology? Hmm... that's a bit vague, but I'll answer the best I can: as stated before, I think astrology is a useful tool that can be used to gain more insight into personality. As for seeing into the future, I haven't looked into that aspect of it. I know old scientists would use the stars to predict what would happen in the future, but I'm not sure if they used astrology or astronomy (e.g. using the star signs and thinking about their personalities versus simply tracking the movements of the stars).

Thanks for reading my post! :~)
