Running

I started running when I was six. I originally got into it because I was becoming good at soccer and I needed to be able to run faster and farther. At first, running wasn’t a usual thing, I would run on and off. The amount I was running was good enough to get me through soccer, but I started running more because I could. It was like a personal challenge to see how far I could go.
When I was 8, I debated quitting running. I had started lacrosse and I was very active anyway so I no longer needed it for soccer. For about 3 months I didn’t run, and I had no intentions of doing so ever again.
Around that time, my mom started running. Although when she started she wasn’t very fast, her persistence and determination was amazing. She would go out every morning for hours. After seeing her determination to be a runner, I got inspired to continue running. Instead of continuing short distance running,  I started doing long distance. At first, I hated it. It was boring and hard, and I hurt after doing it. But after seeing my mom’s effort, I was determined to keep doing it. I started running very frequently, and soon I started really enjoying it.
I thank my mom now for getting me into running, without her, I would have never succeeded without her, she inspired me to keep going no matter how much I didn’t want to run. I realize now how important running has been for me. It has taught me to never give up. I also really love doing it, it was a chance for me to clear my mind and really think about things.

  1. Matthew,
I really enjoyed reading your post. It is cool how your mom got you back in to running after you had quit. It sounds like running is now an important part of your every day life. How much do you run every week? Also how does running compare to other sports that you play?
    Great post,

  2. Hey Matthew,
I really enjoyed reading your post. I think its great that your mom inspired you to run again. Its very sweet and a great addition to your post. Im left with a few questions. Is running a big part of your life compared to soccer? Do you feel running improves the way you feel about yourself? Keep up the great work!

  3. Mathew,
Fabulous job! I like how you include your whole story of running a lot, then quitting, and then getting back into it. It was a tad bit inspirational! Do you and your mom run together frequently? Which one of you is faster?
    Much Love

  4. Hi Matthew,
Great post! I like how you included your own experiences, and how you started running, and gone through the fazes of running. I didn't know anything about why you started running, and now I do. I also didn't know that you played lacrosse. I started playing lacrosse recently!

    Nice job

  5. Hi guys,
Thanks for your thoughts on my post! To address your questions, the amount I run each week depends on what else is going on in my life. If I'm training for something, it might be as many as 20, but if I'm not, it could be as little as 5. Running is a lot more physically demanding compared to a lot of the other sports I play. To me soccer is more important than running, but running helps me do better at soccer so it is essential. After I finish a run it does improve the way I feel about myself, but it also helps me get home work and other stuff done because I tend to be more focused after a run. So yes, running is usually the beginning of good days for me. Most of the long distance runs I do with my mom, but if I'm doing a run thats 5 miles or shorted I usually go on me own because I am alot faster than my mom at short distance. Hope this answered your questions guys!

    Thanks,
    Matthew

  6. Hi Matthew,
I really enjoyed reading your blog post, it was very motivational.
Do you ever like to compete in running events? I also like to run so I can be in good shape for soccer, but sometimes I lack the energy to leave my house. Do you ever have this problem? If so, how do you deal with it?
    Great post! -Layton

  7. Matthew,
Great post, kind of inspiring to keep doing whatever I am doing and push through. I like the end how you thank your mom for helping you keep running. I like how described running long distance, "boring and hard..." that correlates with the nike shirt "Running sucks". Is it true that you ran a half marathon? Awesome Post
