The Frustrations of Sharing a Doc

Our class did a project in Cultures class called "fame". Each class was separated into different groups to study a different country in it's feudal times. The countries were England, the Byzantine Empire, China, and Japan. My class got Japan. We studied Japan and did a presented on it for an hour about it and when the other classes presented about other countries we took notes and got ready for a test. To get ready for this test which had been nicknamed the "final fling".

A little while ago I had an idea. I would make a doc and each class would put all their knowledge on the country they studied into it. So when we took the test we would all have notes that had been made by people who studied the country for 2 months. I made this doc and it went quite horribly, a few of my classmates were kicking people off of it and people were getting mad at me thinking that I had kicked them off.

Then the teachers got involved and everything got a lot more complicated. They mixed stories up, told me that someone was angry at me (though it was probably a mistake), and basically made a bit of a mess. They were trying to make things better though. So in the end the teachers told me to write an email to the whole class and then put everyone on view.

So my teacher says that I should write about my experience sharing a doc with the whole class and what happened once teachers got involved. So here's what I think. I think that the teachers were right that maybe it was to early to share a document with the whole class. There are still people who find it funny to mess with people and to try and get a reaction out of them. In this case it would be the kid who kept kicking people off of the doc. And some people are just not ready to not give into a temptation and start a fight. And when the teachers got involved the relatively simple problem of people kicking other people off the doc got a LOT more complicated.

So next time I want to make notes for a test I'm probably just going to share it with a few of my friends and try to stop things before a teacher gets involved. At least with this incident the whole thing ended in less than 2 weeks. I think the reason why I didn't put everyone on view or just shared it with a few of my friends is because a lot of people made it seem like the test would be super hard and we would need a lot of help and because my class had less than a week to prepare for it.

  1. Hi, I liked how you explained how sharing a document can be annoying, because I think it definitely can. I can relate, lately I was sharing a document with my friend to do a project. My friend made me view only (because she owned the document). It really hurt my feelings and made me pretty mad. Do you have any ideas for how problems like yours and mine could be resolved? I think there should be able to be more than one owner of a document. I really like your blog, good job!

    1. Hi Emma,
Ya the same thing happened to me just a bit ago, I was the owner and people were kicking other people off. These problems are really hard to solve because people's feelings get hurt really easily. I just ended up putting EVERYONE on view. I really wish google docs would make it so people besides the owner couldn't add other people.

      Thanks for commenting Emma

  2. Matteo, I like how you explain all the difficulties about sharing with the whole class and you explain what you would do differently. Do you think that next time if someone else shares a doc with the whole class, would you use it? This is a super cool blog topic. ~Hannah

    1. Thanks Hannah,
If I could change one thing about doing this document I would have put everyone on view a little bit faster. If someone else shared a document with the whole class I would probably use it, if it was something about school like some large important project or something.
      Bye!

  3. Hey Matteo,
I like how you explained how frustrating the doc is. I was one of the people in the document and I can understand you pain! Why do you think that everyone had such bad intentions with the doc, or was it just playful fun?

    1. Thanks,
I think that people do this type of thing because they think it's fun, personally it was NOT fun for me. The teachers got involved and everything got confusing.
      Thanks for commenting

  4. Hey Matteo,
Great post! I also have a lot of frustrations sharing docs so I can relate. Now I only put people on view if they don't have my full trust. When people screw up docs, do you think they are being mean or is it meant to be a joke?

    Thanks,
    Matthew

    1. Hi Matthew,
Ya, I've also have been getting kinda paranoid because of this. I think that they think it's a joke until some grown up gets involved. For the owner though the whole thing is just annoying.
      Bye Matthew

  5. Hey Matteo,
I liked your post, unfortunately, I missed all the drama about the doc from being sick, but the way you described it sounded funny. I liked all the funny parts, and how you described the whole situation. One question, did you ever find out who was kicking people off the doc?
Also can you share the next test notes doc with me? Nice post

    1. Hi Wyatt,
That's too bad you were sick, but since you were a reporter if you had been there the teachers may have wanted to talk with you as well. I did figure out who it was but I'm not really allowed to tell anyone.

      Thanks!

  6. Hi Matteo,

I like how you explained the entire situation from your point of view and the teacher's point of view.
Did you think of changing the settings so that only the owner could add and remove other editors, but everyone was on edit?

Good job on your blog post!

    1. Thanks Matt,
I did think about changing the settings but Avi, Tyler N, and I all couldn't figure out how to make it so only the owner could add and remove people. I couldn't put only some people in view because they would get angry at me.

  7. Hi Matteo,
I like how you resolved the issue, and how brave you were to apologize to the entire class. I also like how you create it differently if you had to share a document with a group. I can understand the frustration of having other people deleting and changing your own text. What would you do if you went back to the situation?

I think that if I were to do this over again I would put everyone on view earlier. Or I would only share it with a few friends.

  8. Hy Matteo,
Great post! I found it really interesting, and helpful. I know what you mean, a lot of people can mess those things up sometimes. I hope it didn't affect your test! I thought it was really bold of you to apologize, sometimes that can be hard, great job!

  9. Hi Matteo,
What a good topic to write about! I think this was cool because it is something that everyone can relate to. Sharing a doc is frustrating, and I think that even teachers can say that. What did people say after you sent out the email? Was it hard to apologize to the whole class? Did the person who put people on view apologize to you? Amazing job.
