I often forget my own privileges of living in 2016. If I were to go back in time, how might my life be different? What things would I lose? What things would I gain? Well, if I were a young pioneer girl, my life would very different from how it is now.
To start, I would not be typing on my laptop right now. Or my phone. Or any electronic device. My entertainment would most likely come from doing chores, telling stories, and singing songs. Maybe drawing, or writing, provided I could read and write. That brings up another difference. I might not be writing this, because I might have no school. Or, at the least, my life would not be very school focused as it is now. My school would be a tent at most, and the rest of my time would be devoted to chores like sewing up clothes, or whatever my mama and papa asked of me.
Another thing that might change is my relationship with nature. Without my house or internet, and with the consistent state of being outside, I would expect to be more connected to nature. I would know the names of almost all the trees I passed along my journey. I would know the best way to start a fire, and how to care for a wagon. And maybe, instead of looking at my watch for 3 to 4 numbers to represent the time, I might look at the sky, guess based upon the sun’s position, and call it sunrise instead of 6:30 AM. Little details like that might change.
I also might have a different connection with my family. Instead of locking myself in my room to do homework at night, I might tend to livestock with my father, or sing and sew dresses with my mother. I might be able to cook up delicious concoctions over a fire with my family at dinnertime instead of making a box of mac’n’cheese. I might know them a little bit better if I rarely left them, and they might know me a little better as well.
Another less-thought-about thing that may change are my dreams and aspirations. Instead of dreaming to be a famous musician, a poet, an author, or a youtuber (that would change the most), I might dream on a smaller scale. Maybe I'd want to know the forest and the trail better than anyone else, or maybe I'd want to become an adventurer. Maybe I'd want to start a town for myself. That would be considered a big dream, especially for a young pioneer girl.
One more thing to add to the list is attire. My normal outfits consist of jeans, a graphic tee-shirt, and boots. Believe it or not, I would not be wearing any of those things in the 1800s. First: none of them had been made; and second: a girl would not be wearing pants in the back then, especially blue jeans. Another fun thing to think about, or else very odd, is that people who wear glasses probably wouldn’t be, had they been living in the 1800s. Glasses had been invented, but they weren’t popular at all, and pioneers probably had other things to focus one.
Lastly, I’m not sure if I would be more carefree or more stressed had I been born back then. Yes, school wouldn’t be an issue, but I would have many chores and a lot of hard work put in front of me each day. I would have to be up early if that’s when I was needed, and I would have to eat what I was given or what I made, because that’s all there was.
To conclude, life as a pioneer girl would be very different in comparison to mine, although it would be fun to go back in time and try it, but it also makes me appreciate the little privileges in life I rarely stop to think about. It makes me remember how easy it is to just go home and listen to music on my phone, when a hundred years ago, that was unthinkable. It makes me want to travel back in time, but it also reminds me to love my own home. I don’t have to be a pioneer to be in touch with nature or my family, I can do those things with just a little extra effort in my day.

Hey Patina,
ReplyDeleteI loved how you related these two types of lifestyles with such clarity.
I wonder if you could maybe add some more pictures to make it more visually appealing next time?
Thanks,
Michael
Dear Patina,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your piece because it brings in so much information and so much on how your life would be so much different. Can you think of any positives of why it'd be better to live back then?
Sincerely,
Adam
Dear Patina,
ReplyDeleteGreat blog! It really makes me think about how much I have, and how hard it would be to live back in the 1800s. I can't imagine not being able to call my friends during summer vacation. So if you could turn back time, how long would you be in the 1800s?
Dear Patina,
ReplyDeleteI love how you compared a pioneer girl and their dream jobs to our dream jobs now! It makes it easy to relate how different jobs that people have now are to what people had in the 1800's. My only question would be did the pioneer girls ever live in one place for a long period of time, or were they constantly moving in their wagon? Great work!
sincerely,
Rachel Y.
Hi Patina,
ReplyDeleteFantastic blog post! It definitely made me reflect on how life back then vs now differs. In honestly can't imagine a world world without my electrical devices or not wearing pants! My question to you is if you were a pioneer girl what would you miss most about your everyday modern life?
Love, Dee Dee
HI Patina,
ReplyDeleteGreat blog post! That was a super great comparison! I didn't know how different it would be! The basics yes, but for example, people didn't were glasses? That is a little bit funky!
Great work!
-Tulip
Dear Patina,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed how specific and relatable your examples for the comparisons between your life and a pioneer girl's life were. I especially liked when you talked about how different your interactions with nature are from a pioneer's. It made me think about how more ways to integrate nature into my everyday life. Maybe next time you could have more images, if you drew your own that would be great because you are such an amazing artist!
-Kelly
Hi Patina!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your blog! I really liked how you were able to compare these thing so well! What future inventions do you think will cause us to have even simpler lives?
- Mikayla
Patina,
ReplyDeleteI really like how you take these two different lifestyles and mash them into an interesting read and a great post! Question: If some of the technology now gets swapped with some of the technology then, how would life be different?
Great Post!
Rylan:)
Patina,
ReplyDeleteI really liked how you were able to bring two really different life styles I really liked the title and post!
One thing I did not quite get was why was the tech then and the tech now so different?
Thanks!
-Alec
Patina,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post.
It was a great way to show how life has changed so much and how your life would be different if you were a pioneer. I also really liked how you talked about how you would be connected more to nature as a pioneer, but how right now you can also be more connected to nature with a little bit more effort. Have you thought about putting more pictures into your post especially because you are such a good artist?
Great job!
-Thea
Dear Patina,
ReplyDeleteI really liked your post as it gave a concise and accurate description of what pioneer life was like while simultaneously listing the many differences between pioneer life and the life people have in the 21th century. My question is, were there any towns founded by women?
Sincerely,
William
Dear Patina,
ReplyDeleteI really liked all of the comparisons you made between the 21st century and pioneer life. I think it would be a little easier to read if you divided up the paragraphs a little more and added more pictures. My one question is that if you were a pioneer, I think that you wouldn't have to know the names of trees or how to cook over a fire. Much like now where you don't have to be a computer genius to work computers. Overall I loved and enjoyed reading your blog post because it was very interesting and well written.
Your Friend,
Jade:)
Dear Patina
ReplyDeleteI love how you really showed how lucky we are compared to the pioneers. I was wondering if you think that we could still get in touch with nature after having been relatively out of touch for so long.
Sincerely Eric
Dear Patina,
ReplyDeleteI like how you compared our life now to the pioneers life, and also how you told us about the changes in the world and the privileges that we have today. Have you thought about adding more pictures or even drawings? But other then that your post was great.
Sincerely,
Ubedei
Hi Patina,
ReplyDeleteI really loved reading this. It made me think whether I would rather be living now or then. I like how you took an optimistic side, and thought about good things about living then, instead of just bad. My question is, did the pioneers had any privilages that we don't have?
Great job!
Téa
Dear Patina,
ReplyDeleteI like how you connected your life to a pioneers life. I never really realized how MUCH we take for granted (like a simple watch that can tell us the time any time we want.) If you were a pioneer girl in the 1800's how would you entertain yourself?
-Emma
Patina,
ReplyDeleteI really liked your blog post. You had very descriptive paragraphs on what each thing would be like. It is interesting to think about living in the 1800's and I never would have thought of my dreams and my relationship with family and nature changing. What would your dreams be if you were a girl growing up in the 1800's?
Great job!
Mara
Patina,
ReplyDeleteThis was a cool blog. I loved how you put into perspective how different life is now than in the 1800's. Question: How much do you think you would enjoy living in the 1800's without the criticism that women received back then?
Dear Patina,
ReplyDeleteI liked your blog post and how you decided to write about the pioneers' lifestyles (comparing them to your own, rather than just sharing information. Or was that the idea behind this post?) One question: What do you think might change about your values, ideals, pastimes, etc. if you were living 150 years ago?
Charlotte

Dear Patina,
ReplyDeleteI like how you started of you first sentence it kind of reminded me of my of my privelages and my question is how much would you travel each day.
Sincerely Emma L.
Hi Patina,
ReplyDeleteI loved your blog post! It was very informative and it was awesome to hear about the differences from a pioneer girl's life to yours. It really helped remind me of how fortunate I am to live in this time period.
Great post,

Patina,
ReplyDeleteWow! I loved your post. It really talked about the connections and differences between the time periods. I just have one question, what would you miss the most if you were to live in the 1800's?
Great post,
Meagan
Patina,
ReplyDeleteI liked how you got to the point of your blog very quickly, and explained in great detail. I have one question, were there actual schools buildings at that time, or were people still homeschooled?
Hi Patina,
ReplyDeleteI was really interested by your post, and I love how you compared your everyday life to what your life would be like if you were a pioneer. I like how you talk about your daily actions and how they would be different in that time period. It also really made me think about how different life was back then, and how much things have changed over the years. What do you think was the best part and the hardest part for people living in the 1800's? Great job!
-Margot
Hi Patina,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your post and it makes me think about what I have today and how I would be different if I lived at a different time. Do you ever consider if you were born in the right time?
-Sophia
Dear Patina,
ReplyDeleteI really liked your blog post! Your writing was exceptional and you brought up some really interesting points that most people would not have thought of. I liked how you were able to compare your life to what your life might have been like if you were a pioneer girl. You made me really grateful that I have so many privileges like going to a good school and having access to technology. Would you rather live in the current time, or at the time of your blog post as a pioneer?
From,
Riley
Hey Patina,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your blog post. Your post was very well written and had a lot of interesting facts. You made me realize all of the privileges I have. Would you have wanted to be a pioneer? Nice Job!
- Isabel
White tiger,
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing blog post! It really makes me think about how much I have, and how lucky I am to have it. It must have been extremely difficult to live back in the 1800s. I cant imagine not being able to drive to the pool or call my friends!
Great job,
-Flexi
